Movie Review: Still Less Than Impressive
Summary: 3 Stars
Once again I find myself torn on how much I actually like xxxHolic. While the characters are continuing to encourage curiosity on what will ultimately happen to them, I'm still not excited to see more. With its very slow story pacing and yet more overreliance on sight gags, xxxHolic has so far not lived up to the hype. With the second half now completely underway though, the series has at least earned enough passing notice to pull me in for the rest. Recommended but with very little enthusiasm.
Summary of xxxHOLiC: Fourth Collection
"From the day you were born, you have always been different from those around you."For high school student Watanuki, this statement could not be more true! Between rain without end and ghostly visions from beyond, the young man is getting used to not being used to anything at all. His role as Yuko's minion seems as close to normal as anything, and the haunted teen trudges forth within this strange world of weaving wishes. Many stop by to peruse the witch's goods, but more often than not the lesson must be learned the hard way. Greed, lies, manipulation, and broken promises. There is always a price to pay.
In the linked episodes "Seal" and "Release," Watanuki learns that some powers transcend even magic. His experiences with a set of identical twins teach him that words are "one chain that can be controlled."Dimensional Witch Yuko expands on the lesson, noting that the words of others can control a person. In addition to the demands of Yuko and the presence of Doumeki, Watanuki has something new to complain about: the magical pipe fox has transformed from a small, furry serpent into a large, mulit-tailed canine that clings to him like a magnet. To restore the pipe fox to its proper form--and settle some unfinished business with the spirit Zashiki-Warashi--Yuko sends Watanuki to a realm that recalls the Garden of Living Flowers in "Through the Looking-Glass." Once again, the oppressive heat of the Tokyo summer hangs over these episodes of xxxHOLIC like a pall. (Rated TV PG: comic violence, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
