Movie Review: Still Funny After 30 Years
Summary: 4 Stars
I originally saw this film during its first release in 1981 and loved it. It was campy, filled with funny lines and situations. I just recently watched it again after nearly 30 years and found it still amusing. George Hamilton's dual performance still holds up incredibly well, and Brenda Vacarro is quite good. Now being 30 years older than when I first saw it, I found Rob Liebman's continual screaming of his lines to be beyond annoying. Rather than a bumbling villain, he is a really bad ham actor playing a really bad ham buffoon.
Still a funny film after 30 years, but it was interesting to watch it again with older eyes and even older perceptions.
Summary of Zorro, the Gay Blade
After having a surprise hit playing Dracula in Love at First Bite, George Hamilton seized the moment and spoofed another movie hero: Zorro. In fact, he plays two characters: the heroic Don Diego, who fights Spanish tyranny in Old California in his secret identity as Zorro, and Diego's long-absent brother, Bunny Wigglesworth, a man totally comfortable with his sexual identity and unafraid of accessorizing the Zorro outfit by rendering it in purple. When the swashbuckler is injured, he turns his sword over to the swishbuckler, who is just as good a swordsman, though a few shades less fiery. Some of the gay humor is heavy-handed, but Hamilton easily handles the comedy demands of the dual roles, and has strong support from Ron Leibman as the chief bad guy. --Marshall FineAction & Adventure DVD Video
