Movie Reviews of Zorro, The Gay BladeMovie Review: A great villain makes a great comedy! Summary: 5 Stars
This hilarious movie is all about Ron Leibman as the over-the-top Alcalde, Esteban and his thwarted attempts to catch Zorro.
What makes a great adventure movie is a great villain and apparently the same goes for adventure-comedy films.
George Hamilton is funny as both Don Diego and Bunny, but without his great interplay with Ron Leibman the movie would be completely lost.
Esteban's repeated assertion that he is "From you! I am from the people!" is hilariously contradicted as he extorts more and more taxes from "the people" and is constantly thwarted by both Zorro's.
There are so many funny comic moments hidden throughout the film as Esteban constantly mutters one-liners under his breath, which are then forgotten as he shouts out orders to his troops.
I describe the movie as Mel Brooks meets Bugs Bunny with it's funny character one-liner jokes and hilarity resulting from the villain never being able to catch the smart-aleck hero.
This really is a smart and overlooked movie without any of the raunchiness or profanity that plagues so many other stupid comedies. Buy it today and get ready to laugh!
Movie Review: Two bits, four bits, six bits, a peso. All for Zorro stand up and say so! Summary: 5 Stars
Great movie. I'm happy to see that it is now available on DVD.
I'm amazed at how many people have never heard of this movie. It was a family favorite of ours as I was growing up, and I naturally assumed that everyone would have had the same experience.
Today at work I quoted a line from this, and then had to explain myself and the movie. As I described the plot and quoted the title, my coworkers looked at me as if I were lying... they couldn't believe that such a movie could have been made. Well, it was, and it is FANTASTIC. I convinced everyone there to look it up on Netflix and put it in their Que. I'm now asking for a copy for Father's Day. (Hurry-up! June is just around the corner.)
After talking the movie up at work today, I called my local Hollywood Video, to see if they had it in stock... sadly, no; they did not have it. However, I did get a curious, "Sir, we don't have that type of movie in stock." Let me tell the world, once and for all, ZORRO THE GAY BLADE IS NOT A GAY PORN FLICK! This movie is family fun at its best. (At least in my family.)
Movie Review: A funny parody of Zorro Summary: 5 Stars
George Hamilton made two comedies in the 80s that people still remember. "Love at First Bite" and "Zorro the Gay Blade". Of the two, I think this one has aged the best.
Much of the spoof seems to be directed towards the 1974 TV production of "The Mark of Zorro" with Frank Langella and Ricardo Montalbon. (It is not in print, but has shown up on cable from time to time.)
What I find interesting is that when the Mask of Zorro came out in 1998, just about every Zorro film was available *except* this one. I guess they did not want people reminded of some of the better lines during their version of Zorro.
"Two bits, four bits, six bits, a peso. All for Zorro stand up and say so!"
If you enjoy Zorro films and are willing to see fun poked at your hero, see this film. It is funny, enjoyable and quite memorable. See it before "The Legend of Zorro" comes out in October 2005.
Movie Review: Farce At Its Finest Summary: 5 Stars
A mono soundtrack? That's the best they could do?In 1981, the creative team of Hal Dresner, Greg Alt, Don Moriarty, and Bob Randall got together and penned one of greatest cinema farces of that decade (and, arguably, ANY decade) when they brought ZORRO, THE GAY BLADE to the silver screen in its laughable glory. But ... the DVD sports only a mono soundtrack? George Hamilton sports double duty here as Don Diego Vega -- the overconfident heir to the Zorro mask -- and Bunny Wigglesworth, his twin brother who's ... well ... not that there's anything wrong with it ... just a bit ... er ... different. After breaking his foot while celebrating Zorro's return, Diego turns over the role of playing Zorro to Bunny ... and the fun begins! A mono soundtrack?!?! The zany comedy also stars the beautiful Lauren Hutton, Brenda Vaccaro, and Ron Liebman. Did I mention it only had a MONO SOUNDTRACK?!?!
Movie Review: If it weren't for cable... Summary: 5 Stars
...I would have missed out on so many great movies!! I first saw this on HBO when I was 12, and I thought George Hamilton was a "hottie". Funny men have always done it for me. Ask my husband. Anyway, I saw this movie last weekend...I'm now in my 30's...and it hasn't suffered any with age! George is still spectacular in two quite different roles; from virile, Spanish playboy to British, preening queen, he does not disappoint. The soundtrack is wonderful...borrowed, I believe, from "The Adventures of Don Juan". The genre is definitely screwball/spoof. You will laugh at the funny dialogue and probably enjoy the action of the fencing sequences as well. I recommend also viewing the original "Mask of Zorro" with Tyrone Power. It's illuminating to see where the "Gay Blade" crew got their inspiration...also interesting to watch Mr. Power playing a "fop". Enjoy! I did.
