Movie Reviews of Ziegfeld Follies

Movie Review: TechniCOLOR
Summary: 5 Stars

While others have fairly evaluated this patchy but ESSENTIAL addition to any musical collection (if only because it contains Vincent Minelli's two best numbers after the American in Paris Ballet - "This Heart of Mine" and "Limehouse Blues" - see them and be amazed!) noone has mentioned the COLOR. I am a film maker and teacher and old enough to have seen original Technicolor before the prints started to deteriorate. And until Blue Ray and/or High Def is really here (and I pray they are mastering classics like this in HD), this is THE BEST EXAMPLE OF TECHNICOLOR in all its unfaded glory I have seen. So sumptuous was the process (and so superior to the Eastman process which superceded it for economic reasons) its look needs to be remembered and constantly compared in order that the advent of HD not be marred by trying to emulate the look of an inferior process (35mm Eastmancolor). AND to avoid agregious attempts to modernise classics like 'THE SEARCHERS' available on DVD in two versions, but the latest so called "Ultimate Collector's Edition" of which attempts to contemporize its color with washed out flesh tones and green skies (whereas the earlier mastering available originally on laser disc remains sumptuous and pretty true to the original).

Put on 'ZIEGFELD FOLLIES', take "This Heart of Mine" and rack the chroma (color) on your television all the way up - Technicolor can not only take it, but revels in it (I have a Hi-Def Sony Bravia, but if you have an older set, stop if the colors start to "bleed"). Now pull the chroma back ever so slightly until flesh tones become acceptable, then BE TRULY AMAZED not just at the decor, but Technicolor's capacity to render reds and yellows (it is also superior to our modern color in the blue green spectrum). On my set this film is best viewed with the chroma at 90/100 (while 'AN AMERICAN IN PARIS' can take 100/100).

Movie Review: Starry Eyed Presentation
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the few musicals to finally get the full DVD treatment and it certainly deserves it. Though the film is strictly a showcase of MGM talents, it manage to captures the styles, moods and elegance of Vincente Minelli in terms of sets decoration, production design and musical directions. Musical numbers ranges from popular standards to the world of opera. Stand outs are Fred Astaire and Lucille Bremmer musical numbers, especially 'This Heart of Mine' is simply beautiful and lush and 'Limehouse Blues' which is mesmerising, Judy Garland's 'Interview with A Lady' is delightful and witty, Lena Horne's 'Love' is haunting and seductive.
Remastering of the film is excellent and the colours are restored to its glory and it is magnificent and the sound remixed to Dolby Digital Stereo does justice to the film. The film hasn't any plots and there are so many gems to chose from as each segments is unique to the performer and it is a joy to behold.
A true musical tribute to the artists and production crew in the MGM musical reportoire.

Movie Review: One of the Great MGM Musicals
Summary: 5 Stars

Any musical featuring Astaire, Garland and Kelly in their prime, and directed in color by Vincente Minnelli is bound to be a hit. And this one certainly was.
With Garland emerging into womanhood, we see a glimpse of her vocal magnetism and comic genius in a musical number spoofing movie stars. Astaire has several big numbers, including the incredible oriental ballet with Lucille Bremer. We see Astaire for the first and only time in oriental makeup and garb; the dancers costumed in red against a blue-purple set is typical Minnelli--magnificent contrast and artwork. And the Kelly-Astaire duet is their only serious dancing together in their careers (discounting That's Entertainment which occurred well past their active years). The video quality is like being at the movies--especially if you watch it on your HD-enhanced blu-ray player.

Movie Review: What a Masterpiece!
Summary: 5 Stars

I grew up watching my Grandparent's VHS copy so was thrilled to see that Ziegfeld Follies is now on DVD! The cover is quite different to that of the Bill Collins VHS but the quality of the film itself is remarkable. Watch it on Widescreen if you can, it is absolutely beautiful!
Not only are there songs like 'This Heart of Mine' by Fred Astaire (with gorgeous choreographing to match), 'Love' by Lena Horne and a catchy up-tempo number by Judy Garland, but you'll also see some catchy comedy songs like 'The Babbit and the Bromide' with Gene Kelly, 'Bring On Those Wonderful Men' (Virginia O'Brien) and some hilarious skits starring Fanny Brice and Red Skelton. This really is a true gem for fans of all ages!!! 10/10.
