Movie Reviews of ZeligMovie Review: SHOWING ONE'S TRUE COLORS Summary: 5 Stars
Uproariously funny spoof of one Leonard Zelig, a totally ubiquitous sort, who effortlessly turns into types with whom he is associating. Filmed in 1930's newsreel style, with appropriate background music, and third party narration, it's Allen at his best, treading waters that anyone else would fear for slander. As psychiatrists attempt to diagnose his condition, Zelig is busy annnoying a Pope, coming between 2 presidents, changing nationalities, changing races, and stupifying the entire planet. It's a film for those who are still able to laugh at themselves and the human condition, at least for 90 minutes. This reviewer is surprised by the relative paucity of reviews, but not the qualityof the film thereof. Lighten up and enjoy!
Movie Review: Zelig Summary: 5 Stars
This hilarious faux documentary tells the life story of a "human chameleon," complete with highbrow narration and interviews with intellectuals like Susan Sontag and Saul Bellow. One of Allen's great comic achievements, "Zelig" is a feature-length gag that wrings laughs from Allen's nebbish-y namesake, who happens always to be in a place of historic importance, straddling a towering figurehead of politics, sport, or genius. But in true allegorical fashion, Allen also works in jibes at bogus media hype and puts a sweet twist on the ever-elusive quest for personal definition. Forget Forrest Gump: "Zelig" is a funnier and more insightful film by far.
Movie Review: Allen's Brillant Mockumentary Summary: 5 Stars
Zelig, the Woody Allen film that time almost forgot, is one of his 10 best. The story is well explained by other reviewers. Nevertheless, the DVD (without any extras except a fascinating trailer) is superior. The grainy film stock and sound are excellent. The movie is a timely today as it was in 1983. A fascinating film from a variety of perspectives. It was a painstaking labor of love that really addresses the need for love, assimilation, and life in the 1920s or 30s. A superior film, well worth the 15 bucks.
Movie Review: Citizen Kane, Meet Zelig Summary: 5 Stars
Just great film making. Nothing more, nothing less. Technically advanced for it's day and ahead of it's time plotwise, this is one of the great film gems of all time. The plot? Ridiculous. The acting? Hilariously deadpanned. The problem? It can only be made once. Everyone will love this film. And it has one of the great cinematographers of all time manning the camera, Gordon Willis. And Allen's hilarious send up of fame but not fortune is one of his best efforts. A winner all around.
Movie Review: Yes, It's Allen's "Citizen Kane" Summary: 5 Stars
Loved this when it came out. And after watching it again I was determined to post a review and compare it to the Orson Welles masterpiece. Then I saw someone had already done so! I'm glad that I am not the only one who feels that this film can be mentioned in the same sentence as Kane. I was going to point out that it is every bit as original, well writen, acted, photographed and edited as "Citizen Kane." And a whole lot funnier.
