Canada Movie Reviews of ZelaryMovie Review: Filmed and 5 StarsZelary is a well done and interesting story. It begins in the Nazi occupied city of Prague during World War II. Joza, a middle aged man, from a mountain village, is brought to the hospital because he was seriously injured in a saw mill accident. The nurse Eliska who is on duty, helps by donating blood to save the injured Joza.Eliska is also working in the Czech Resistance as a carrier. When the Nazis find out about the young woman's underground work, her boyfriend, a doctor in the hospital convinces her to leave the city and go with Joza to his home in the mountains where she can hide. The transition from city life to a cabin in a very rural area is not easy for the young and sophisticated nurse. She has to learn to blend in and become part of the rural life. The story has everything, love, hope and historic significance. The scenery is absolutely beautiful and the actors were all very believable. Don't miss this one. It's unforgettable! Movie Review: Magnificent, multi-layered adventure
Since its surprise nom at the '08 Oscars, I was compelled to see this film, and I'm quite pleased that I did. Under the dark umbrella of the Nazis, Czechoslovakia endured. A clever plot bringing a resistance fighter on the lam to the remote mountain title village, her adventure is at once upsetting and renovating. The simplicity of it all soon takes over, and we see a slice of life rife with love, suspicion and general cameraderie. Exquisitely photographed, sensitively directed by Ondrej Trojan, and fine editing (belying it's 2˝ hour running time) make this a feast for the eyes, ears and heart. A stunning performance from Anna Geiserovĺ carries this film with conviction, as well as Gyorgy Cserhalmi as Joza, her savior and, ultimately, the love of her life. I've read the other reviews, and there's not much more to say. I'm very pleased to have experienced this "Zelary". DVD extras are few but instructive. Ms. Geislerovĺ deserved an Oscar nom, a very complete and diverse performance. Bravi to all! |
