Movie Reviews of Z

Movie Review: Costa Gavras in his best achievement!
Summary: 5 Stars

Yves Montand plays the role of a leader of a peace movement . Suddenly he will be the fatal victim .
Product of this murderer Trigtinant will be the government investigator . The plot is incredible , and like a huge web , it goes expanding showing in all its merciless nakenness the sordid and corrupt atmosphere in the militar governement .
Based on a real fact 1963 , this film literally opened a gate and became in a powerful motive for next extraordinary works in that age as The Mattei affair , Investigation of a citizen above suspicion among the most remarkable issues.
Pitifully the movie still maintains its powerful message.
Awarded as best foreign film in 1969 . A classic.

Movie Review: This is an Important Film
Summary: 5 Stars

"Z" was perhaps the first Foriegn film I remember really making an impression on me. Remember Martin L.King and Bobby Kennedy had been assassinated just a year or so before, so this film felt like it was real life! Yves Montand is outstanding as the opposition candidate who is assassinated by Thuggs who inturn are protected by government conspiracy. It is on a par with any Hollywood film of it time. The sound track music is unforgetable and is a perfect match to the drama.

This release is in french with english subtitles!
There is also a earlier, "above average English dub" that aired on TV and in a Laser Disc release that I would also recommend if you can find it.

Movie Review: 'Z'
Summary: 5 Stars

Based on the real-life murder of populist Greek liberal Gregorios Lambrakis in 1963, this incendiary political thriller epitomizes the idea of a "cinema of resistance". It is also a compelling story, with Montand delivering a brief but intense performance as the assassinated pacifist, and Trintignant providing an emotional jolt as the puppet judge who surprises everyone by indicting high-level officials. Costa-Gavras keeps our pulse pumping with shotgun pacing, punchy edits, and sudden turns of events. "Z," which means "He is alive" in ancient Greek, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and remains timely in today's world of lapsed ethics.

Movie Review: One of the best...a classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie features some of the best suspense and action (70s style) of any film in its genre. The acting is superb, the direction and cinematography outstanding, and the plot is both edgy and fun. It closely parallels a real world set of events in Greece, without turning them into Hollywood hype. Watch it and see what film-making was before formulaic revenue generation models drove every production decision.

Movie Review: 4 stars out of 4

The Bottom Line:

One of the few foreign films to get a Best Picture nomination, this timeless thriller about a political assassination and subsequent cover-up keeps getting more and more interesting before culminating in an ending that can only be called perfect; the more I think about it the more I think it's a truly great motion picture, so watch it and start thinking along with me.
