Movie Reviews of Yundi Li: Live in ConcertMovie Review: A great pianist Summary: 5 Stars
Yundi Li has all the qualities for being a great pianist. He plays so good as Krystian Zimerman.
Movie Review: A Blossoming Career Deserves A Better Production Than This Summary: 4 Stars
Li is no heavy-weight pianist. Neither is Bunin or even Zimerman. And don't foeget that Chopin himself weighed less than a hundred pounds after all. And judging from the steam and progess Li has made, Lang Lang's position is certainly under threat. And any viewer who is interested in Li or how Chinese pianists nowadays are doing should perhaps go for this-- here we have to thank Martha for doing a good job in picking him as the winner of the Chopin Competition. Now in his mid-twenties, and musically out of almost nowhere, Li is already a full fledged musician.
Of course, viewers should not compare him with Arrau's fine balance between the extreme high and rather low register; or his scales with Richter's. This is not fair, for Arrau and Richter are such great artists. Li is already so close to Zimerman now.
Furthermore, what we hear may have more to do with the accoustics of the hall, something which has more to do with the engineers than the performer himself. And I say so because I'm a bit concerned about the quality of the picture of this DVD. It appears to me more like a VCD than DVD production (or somewhere in between): it is slightly below average DG production and the camerawork is also average only. This is obviously not fair to a blossoming career that Li is now having. One star is taken for want of a better production.
Movie Review: Excellent pianist, miserable photography Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great DVD, with great sound, and an impressive performance. Yundi Li's technique is seemingly effortless, and his mastery of the piano are outstanding, especially at his age at the performance. There are very few mistakes (adjacent notes touched) that would be noticed only by a listener who has memorized the works performed. His tempi are reasonable, although occasionally hurried, but not so out-of-control as with Martha Argerich, and not slumped as Claudio Arrau's. His overall performance is awsome.
On the other hand, the photography is totally inappropriate. Watching a classical performance is not the same as watching drama, and the competent photographer usually knows when to focus on the face or the hands. This is terribly missed in this production, and you find yourself almost begging the photographer (so to speak) to show the hands in critical passages. I see that a previous reviewer also mentioned that point. I normally don't look much at credits, but here, I have to mention that the photographers - Walter Hasenfratz, Michael Horcher, Gary Kaul, Christian-Michael Oertel, and Karl-Heinz Zeagler - did an extremely poor job. I gave only four stars for that reason.

Movie Review: So so, but so what? Summary: 3 Stars
Man, it's amazing these fawning reviews....Li's performances of Chopin basically imitate those of Horowitz. Li brings nothing new to the table. He makes a mistake on the third scherzo, and you can see how he reacts to it, following the completely misplaced dissonance with a guarded and wooden performance. OK, he can get 99% of the notes right, but is he making music?
