Movie Reviews of Youth without YouthMovie Review: Just in Time!!! Summary: 5 Stars
A mystery wrapped in an enigma encapsulated in a movie. Coppola has accomplished greatness again, managing to touch on the themes of lost love, and regained, youth, the nature of time, the search for knowledge, reincarnation and the non-linearity of time.
Is now now? Is the me writing this the same me as yesterday or as tommorow? Is the me that awakens exactly the same as the me the went to sleep the night before and what exactly happened in between? Are the people of the 1940's or 1890's actually still there, all of us in the now that is the present, or is the intensity of an experience sufficient for it to defy time?
I Know exactly the genesis of Coppola's idea and the compulsion that drives it. It is a universal imperative, contained in all of us and summarized in the first sentence of Aristotle's metaphysics.
It is in the sunlit radiance of the dawn as easily as in the memories of the lost loves of youth and it is in the confrontation with evil and the adherence to the sanctity of life, even unto the admission and allowance of its end.
As for the other, he knows it too and will admit it, though on his plane things are seen more completely, still it is not for him to partake of this life, that is reserved for us. The choice is ours. And that is the ultimate meaning of this remarkable and enjoyable film. The answers are there but for a very first step one must seek them and this involves the admission of that fact.
Movie Review: Where's the third rose? Summary: 5 Stars
Romania is on the brink of war. Dominic Matei (Tim Roth in his lifetime role) is a linguistic professor who suddenly is struck by a bolt of lighting, and almost dies. But an unexplainable fact will happen; his intellectual powers will intensify themselves and the time will make a bypass over him.
He will object of investigation and doctors and obviously for the Nazi occupátion forces. His life will experience a dramatic cross over, when he keeps in constant high voltage emotional state. Becoming a true Guinea's pig, he will have to fled from the Nazis; on the other hand, when he met another curious strange case of a woman injured by natural causes, who eventually will lead them to be in love.
A relentless human chase, a tragic reflection about the human condition, a marvelous romantic love story, a fascinating philosophical speculation whcih even will include regressions until almost reach the proto language.
This is the work of a consecrated master of the cinema. No one could sustain such visual vigor and cinematic pulse the dramatic progression of this original plot.
Captivating and intriguing movie from the bery beginnig until the poetic finale.
Movie Review: Who said Americans can't make deep movies? Summary: 5 Stars
European films usually have better content, not so with this movie.
It was deep, required thought, yet was entertaining.
PROs
cinematography
drama
sex
existentialism
well balanced
CONs
Natzis
greed
suicide
murder
I thought the movie was ironic because Dominic never fulfilled his lifelong objective.
He was a philosopher & a researcher, not a scientist.
He lacked the initiative to do whatever it took to complete his goal.
The Natzis, on the other hand, sacrificed all to get the goals they desired.
They had no compassion whatsoever.
That's what made this movie interesting.
A guy gets the resources he needs to complete his objective, then fails.
I would tell you more, but this is one of those movies where you need to pick it apart to fully understand it.
This would be a great movie for an English class.
Movie Review: FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, OPUS 23 Summary: 5 Stars
****1/2 2007. Based on Mircea Eliade's Youth Without Youth, this film was written, produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Struck by a lightning, a 70 years old Romanian teacher survives and is rewarded by the ability to live a second life that will allow him to assimilate the whole human Knowledge. This is a haunting movie dealing with important themes such as time, love, oldness or Man's origin, it kept me awake late last night long after its ending. I wouldn't qualify this film as arty because its form and its story aren't incomprehensible for the lambda viewer. The themes handled by the director are intellectually demanding but their exposition is very simple; that's the mark of a great director. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: Beautiful, engrossing, haunting & thought provoking Summary: 5 Stars
The unfortunate title of this gorgeous film almost made me miss it. It played in our San Diego area for about ten minutes; so that when I recommended it to all my friends, it was, sadly, nowhere to be found. I cannot wait to own it and then share it.
The storyline is interesting and highly unusual, the actors are perfect for their roles and FFCoppola has created a magnificent journey for heart and mind. The music is beautiful, the sets sumptuous, the baroque lighting just right, the sense of wonder is palpable throughout.
It was two hours of an engrossing, epic journey through the twisting tapestry of time, space and the theory of everything.
I highly recommend this film and thank you Francis, for another absolutely fabulous creation.
