Movie Reviews of Yours, Mine and Ours

Movie Review: Sweet family comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

Helen North (Lucille Ball) is the recently widowed mother of eight children; Frank Beardsley (Henry Fonda) just lost his wife a year ago and has ten kids. They meet when Frank comes in to the Air Force Base dispensary where Helen works as a nurse, and start dating. They're both afraid to tell the other about their big families, for fear it will scare them off, but of course, it doesn't. They marry and settle into a big house with their eighteen children and soon there's one more on the way. Through all the ups and downs of blending two families, the parents are models of love, kindness, and respect.

This sounds like a fairy tale, but it's based on a true story, Helen North Beardsley's memoir, "Who Gets the Drumstick?" Fonda makes a handsome and wise dad and while Ball is stuck with some silly slapstick, she still comes off as a sincere and doting wife and mother. It's a wholesome, even inspiring family comedy that can be enjoyed by all ages. Heartily recommended.

Movie Review: A really wonderful warm movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda work beautifully together in this lovely movie about finding (and keeping) love despite many...many...many obstacles (18 to be exact!).
I am not a fan of movies which are focused on children but the two clear stars here are Ball and Fonda which is a great thing, their chemistry jumps off the screen and they are able to handle the comedy and drama with equal aplomb.
Particularly impressive was Lucille Ball with a well-rounded nuanced acting performance ranging between hysterical slap-stick (involving roving eyelashes and THE ultimate 'cocktail' of all time)and moments of quiet, serious and mature reflection. The fleeting yet tangible loneliness her character expressed when meeting Fonda's character in the hospital and the later, breakthrough, conversation between her and Tim Matheson in the laundry were amazingly, honestly and heart-breakingly handled and only hinted at the sheer depth of talent that this legend had to offer.

Movie Review: Everyone should see this!
Summary: 5 Stars

I wasn't really intending to write a review on this film, but when I saw another review with rather crude references to sterilization and how awful large families are, I just had to.

Having grown up in a large family myself, this is the kind of film that I feel at home watching. I am the oldest of six children, and while it was sometimes hectic--my gosh, was it fun! If I were married, I'm sure I would be having a large family, too.

I really loved the message of this movie. While Helen is in labor--"Dad, Dad! Mom says they're coming six minutes apart!"--her oldest daughter Colleen is agonizing over what to do about her boyfriend, who considers her old-fashioned and prudish. This is when Henry Fonda gives one of the best little speeches I have ever heard in the movies, about life and love. He basically says, "Until you're ready for this, [pregnancy] forget it."

In today's society, this message is sorely needed.

Movie Review: One of Lucy's Best!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my all time favorites. I watched this movie many times as a child and loved it. When I finally found it on VHS years ago I bought it immediatly. Now that DVD has become popular I knew I had to have this version as well. All of the scenes are hilarious, but everybody comments on the "Drunk" scene or the "floating eyelash" so I will comment one of my other favorites...the scene where Helen and Frank are strolling by the shops after their first (and supossedly last) date. He tells her he wants to buy her a momento to remember him by and she picks up the jade statue and they are told by the store owner that it is a "goddess of fertility". The look on both of their faces is priceless because it just points out their situation and the fact that neither needs help having children! The way that they eventually come together as one big family in the end is wonderful. Well worth watching.....and owning.

Movie Review: Hilarious and one of Lucille Ball's best!
Summary: 5 Stars

In my opinion, this is one of Lucille Ball's better movies. Lightly based on a true story, it is mixed with heart-touching moments to downright hilarity. If it is accuracy that you are looking for in this movie, you will not find it. It is a typical Hollywood version but a funny and delightful one at that.

I have never seen the remake of this with Dennis Quaid and perhaps at some point may decide to do so. I just happen to be one of those who can't quite understand why Hollywood remakes movies that were successful the first time around. I can't help but wonder if there is a significant lack of writer-creativity today.

This movie has been a great addition to my library because I never tire of watching it. Plus, it's a fun reminder of what life was like back then just observing the automobiles, clothes styles, furniture, etc. Truly, a fun walk down memory lane.
