Movie Review: Worked for us!!!

I purchased the Your Baby Can Read DVDs for my daughter when she was five months old. My husband and I showed her the videos twice a day according to Dr. Titzer's viewing schedule (1 month for the starter DVD, 2 months each for Volumes 1 & 2, and 1 month each for the remaining two DVDs). I knew that it would take 7 months for her to view the whole set, and so I decided to reserve judgment until she reached her first birthday. Well, she just celebrated her first birthday, and I can say that it worked for us!! My husband was just saying that he considers the Your Baby Can Read set money well spent. At about 10 months, my daughter started doing things along with the videos. She would clap when they showed the word "clap" and wave when they showed the word "wave," etc. She could even do the actions when I showed her the videos with the volume muted which told me she wasn't just recognizing the spoken language in the videos but was recognizing the written words. Then last week, one week before her first birthday, I got out a small whiteboard and a dry erase marker and starting writing words on the board for her to "read." She can't speak yet, but she has read over thirty words off the whiteboard (and we are discovering more words that she can read every day). She communicates her understanding through various means. If the word is an action, she performs the action. If is a household object, she picks up or points to the object. If it is a body part, she will point to or wiggle the body part. My husband and I were absolutely amazed!! We followed Dr. Titzer's instructions to the letter, no other television for her except the videos. In addition to the videos, we also labeled many objects around the house and read them to her frequently. So she can also read words that were not featured in the videos such as table, door, and television. I am certain that there are words that she recognizes that she can not communicate her understanding yet, such as tiger, elephant, and bears. As her ability to speak improves, I expect to be further amazed by what she has learned. My advice to other parents is to start as young as possible, follow Dr. Titzer's viewing schedule even if you are not seeing any progress yet, avoid other telelvision, watch the videos with your child while acting out the actions and singing along, label objects around your house and read the labels to your child frequently, and read to your child at least 20 minutes a day. As a parent and a teacher who has worked in both general education and special education, I highly recommend these videos.
