Movie Reviews of Young@HeartMovie Review: Delightful film for ages 5 to 105 Summary: 5 Stars
Saw the 2-hour film twice on PBS TV. Glad that Amazon had it in stock. The extras on the DVD are added delights.
Documentary about some 30 oldsters (average age 81) who rock musically, despite their inevitable physical declines. The smiles, music, and general high spirits more than compensate for the moments of sadness. The group also has toured in USA and Europe. Here we see them in rehearsals, and in SRO performances at a local theater and a county jail.
Extra benefits if, like me, the viewer is older than 75; and still recognizes autumn scenery and the semi-rural places and streets/buildings around Northampton, MA. The British (?) director and film crew capture the people and places elegantly through fresh eyes. Five stars!!
Movie Review: you gotta have heart! Summary: 5 Stars
Mmmm mmm good -- so delicious and satisfying. I feared it may be a tad too sweet, but there were layers of surprise, which made me laugh and cry. My Mother has Alz, and my Dad died (almost) 10 years ago, yet I saw them in some of these seniors and relived their spirit through these folk.
I absolutely did not find this "slow" as one reviewer did, au contraire, it was an engaging way to know some individuals more intimately. Familiar songs took on new meaning when arranged for this group of seniors.
Icing on the cake was some absolute gems in the bonus tracks this DVD offers. Sometimes DVD 'deleted scenes' are "token" or seemingly thrown in with no added value, but not so "Young at Heart".
I thoroughly enjoyed this film!
Movie Review: "Young @ Heart" made my heart glad Summary: 5 Stars
What a perfect film. This documentary about a choral group with an average age of 80 is priceless. I'm in my 60's but I thought this film was so spectacular that I sent it to all of our relatives for Christmas, no matter what their age, and they felt the same way about it. It not only makes you want to sing, but the joy, sorrow, laughter and empathy that the film evokes goes beyond any words I could adequately put into print. Grab some friends, relatives, strangers, whatever and sit down and enjoy this warm and nurturing documentary together. You'll be glad you did. And if you're not hooked with that first James Brown scream sung by one of the women in the first few seconds then you don't deserve to grow old.
Movie Review: Gives me Hope!! Summary: 5 Stars
So, I am not officially a "senior" but this chapter of life is in view and I still have a few aging parents around. While watching a flick about a group of old-timers singing might not entice you to view, let me nudge you over the conservative edge for a really fun free-fall. These precious, bright, independent and courageous spirits lifted MY spirits, had my toes tapping and I heard myself laughing with JOY...heck, I was even singing along to the Ramone's "I Want To Be Sedated". This is the kind of golden oldy I aspire to be! I loved being shown more room, space, joy and purpose for my own future. I watched this film over a week ago and its spirit is still making me smile. Highly recommended!!
Movie Review: So Cool Summary: 5 Stars
So cool...a film about a choir of older people that is not insulting, demeaning, stereotypical, gross, with all the usual ageist jokes and put-downs. In our youth culture it gets harder and harder to see elders honored for their full lives and talents and let alone look at them especially as their own kind of group where one might not even want young people. OMG!!! Buy this or rent it and get your money to the group if at all possible. They have their own website. It is a few years old but if you missed it give it to yourself if you are old or young and to someone you love who is old or young and tell everyone about its heart touching loveliness. Happy New Year ...So Good and So Cool.
