Movie Review: Lost Horizon
Summary: 3 Stars
"Young Girls of Wilko" seemed like a good bet for a European film with an established director but, in my book, this movie never got off the ground. I think the biggest problem was that it tried too hard to be cerebral. Wajda is good but he's not Bergman. I spent the whole movie wishing that there was a character of substance. The main character is a middle-aged former military officer. Most of us will likey surmise that his combat experience left him empty and disappointed with life itself. The opening scene is of a funeral of a friend. We seem him asking himself if life has ANY purpose or meaning. He's already decided it doesn't. Thus the first 5 minutes of the movie has left us depressed and I, for one, never recovered. This guy (I can't recall his name and why should I care; he doesn't) goes out of his way to be depressed. There are some real options for an attitude adjustment (refer to the title of the film) but he is focussed on his negativity. I was glad this film finally ended. In a movie without hope, I don't know what I was hoping for.
