Movie Reviews of You Are Not Alone

Movie Review: Fasttrack down Memory Lane
Summary: 4 Stars

For those of us that were young and idealistic when this movie was shown for the first time in 1980, the movie will be a pleasant reminder of the ideals and ideas we thought were so important at that time. The movie is very political correct seen through the 1980 glasses. Oh so idealistic and correct the young teacher's statement are, and oh so old fashioned and fascistic the rector's view are! Of course the young and pure ideas had to win forth! So archaic the whole movie is, looked through the 2008 glasses.
But if you can endure the political correctness, the movie is a gem. The young actors are very fresh and honest. The acting might not be in the Oscar class, but what they lack in experience they have in abundance in freshness and enthusiasm. The main character Kim played by Peter Bjerg is in addition stunningly beautiful. I'm not sure today's young people will enjoy this movie, for that the world might be too different. Some may also be taken aback by the frontal nudity of young boys and how open gay love between young boys are shown. Considering how Sally Mann was treated after publishing nude photos of her own children, I would not be surprised that some will turn their backs on this movie in disgust. To bad for them! Buy the movie!

Movie Review: I Prefer the One Disc Version of the DVD
Summary: 4 Stars

It's hard to add anything to what's already been stated in regard to You Are Not Alone. However, I feel the one disc DVD is the best option because it provides the best picture. The difference is, indeed, noticeable compared to the two disc version of the DVD. Also, I did not find anything cut in the one disc version from the two disc one. True, the two disc version has photos of Peter Bjerg at 15 in addition to an interview with him. It should be stressed, however, the interview is written out for you to read, and does not have him speaking. For the difference in picture quality you can certainly do without the photos of Peter at 15 (I wouldn't know it was the same person), and the interview. In regard to the main characters both Peter Bjerg age 11 (Kim) with the long flowing hair and captivating smile, and Anders Agenso age 13 (Bo) are appropriately cast in their roles, and are undoubtedly the stars of the movie. The fact that two young boys choose to express their affection for one another by hugging and kissing should not be something to flip out over. Watch the movie with an open mind, and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Movie Review: Shocking for the time..especially for straights
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this film. It is so honest and open. Boys in love and with relatively few problems associated with it. Of course, this could never have been produced here, especially in the year it was made. I am sure it shocked the Jesus police as well and everyone else that thinks boys should not have any emotional or sexual encounters until they are 20, and NEVER a gay one. It is refreshing to see that in Europe this subject is explored and looked at with out prejudice. The end scene of the 2 boys in love will still shock American sensibilities. It keeps getting worse here. It's ok to electronically steal millions from banks and stores, it's ok to be in the MOB, it's ok for the government to support oil companies polluting the world and stealing billions from the populace, it's ok for President Boob to be in bed with the Saudi terrorists, drug dealers and murders run free...but have sex...go to jail...I am sure the older boy would be promptly arrested in the US today for "violating" the younger one with his kisses. Hahahha

Movie Review: Good coming of age film
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this on a whim. I have heard and read so much about this film, that I wanted to see what all of the hype was about. This film is a story of what a group of young adolescent boys experience what most do at their age: confusion, exploration, reblling against their parents, etc. It is set in an experimental school of boys in Holland (?) that has different methods of teaching. Two of the boys develop an interest in each other, one of whom is the headmaster's overly-protected son. The boys get to know one another by going to the local village, hanging out at the school, and wandering the woods with each other. The film sometimes drags, but it does show what happens when boys go through with what they are feeling rather than hiding their feelings.

Movie Review: Unique
Summary: 4 Stars

A interesting film in the likes of Barnens o,Let the right one in,and This Special Friendship.Funny to look at this film to realize that it is getting rather old but well worth seeing as there has yet to be a American version or a film like this produced in America dealing with young love this directly. The film is rather PC as other have commented on but for me that is kind of part of the charm as it takes you back to the whole 1980's feel to realized we were all a bit more relaxed, niave, innocent, hopeful and a bit younger than we are now.
