Movie Reviews of Yes - Yessongs

Movie Review: Good representation of a 1970's concert experience
Summary: 3 Stars

The movie is definitly a good reproduction of the actual concert...as I actually saw the live show at the time. If you are looking for updated technology and sound...not going to find it here. Yes was, and still is very unique in the Rock world...very talented musicians playing complex pieces. Concert sound reproduction was not even close to the digital world of today, and the movie sound is very close to what it was like then. Video graphics also have the same dated feel. The movie accuratly shows Yes as they were in 1972. The music is excellent, if one is listening with the realities of the time in mind. I enjoyed seeing it very much, and gained new appreciation of just how avante garde Yes really was, and how risky their music was way back then.

The stage show was incredible at the time- no one had attempted to create mood and image blending sound with the limited stage effects one could use with light and fog. Tame by todays standards, it's hard to remember that special effects basically did not exist then.

So...if you are a fan of Yes, especially one old enough to have seen them during their rise to world fame- this is an essential "must have". For newer fans that want to see one of the concert tours that re shaped the way bands thought about stage performances for years to come- also of interest. For those that have to be critical about nuance and production values, or need to find fault in technical effects...you'll love this, because you can revel in your deep knowledge of stuff that completly misses the point. Lots to be critical about on that level.

Yes is still performing some of the same songs today, with the digital clarity we have come to expect. Over 30 years later, still with millions of fans, and playing music that has stood the test of time. There are very few bands that have been touring together for 35 years! When "Yessongs" is viewed within that context, I'm confident you'll enjoy it!

Movie Review: Please Update This "Documentary" Jon & Chris?
Summary: 3 Stars

Ah...My first introduction to Yes was the live 3 lp set of Yessongs in 1973! I heard The Yes Album. "Roundabout"'s mystic arrangement was bouncing around in my head; As was the Anderson update on 'The Jetson's' theme song: "Long Distance Runaround." Realized the rhyme, so much later. Much later. I bought the VHS version of this landmark yes "document" in the mid-Eighties. Had to have it. Yessongs is the quintessimal live album of that era. It easily equals Allman Brothers At Fillmore East. These guys kicked butt, live.

Aurally this differs enough from the landmark Yessongs[still, itself waiting to be upgraded to the millenium sonically]. But even the 90's upgrade of the Yessongs' 3 album set to 2 CDs is passable.

What is a crime is that this magnificant "documentary" of the key Yes lineup: Anderson, Squire, Wakeman, Howe, and White languishes in the distended state it is. Even un-updated aurally and visually this concert
is still powerful.

I only wish it had gotten the loving care and re-integration that Pink Floyd's Live At Pompeii had. I'd give it more than 3 *** if it was seriously upgraded. But it ain't. See, also The Grateful Dead Movie.
C'mon Jon and Chris; Are you ashamed of your baby pictures?

Movie Review: Yessong, Noquality
Summary: 3 Stars

I give this DVD 3 stars, VERY reluctantly. The selection of songs on this DVD is awesome. Every song a true classic. The awesome talent of all the players is mind boggling (to an amateur musician). The quality of this DVD, however, strips a couple stars off the rating.

I'm not sure why the movie didn't have half the songs the album did, or why the songs aren't in the same sequence on both. I was hoping to get the remastered CD to play along with the movie, because the sound quality on this DVD is absolute garbage. I don't know what sort of magical systems some of these other reviewers have that make it sound so good, but on my Pioneer surround sound system it sounds like, well...garbage. I can forgive the video quality being grainy, since the film is more than 30 years old. But with the phenomenal improvements in sound reproduction, such as digital remastering, I see no reason for this DVD to sound so bad. I watched it twice, the second time to see if I could fiddle with the settings on the surround sound system, but no such luck. After that I took if off my DVD shelf and hid it in a drawer, somewhere, in another room, so nobody would know I have it...

Movie Review: Not one for showing off your DVD player, but good for fans!
Summary: 3 Stars

The value of this DVD of the group, shot in December 1972 at London's Rainbow Theatre, depends entirely on your perspective -- Yes music fan or technophile.

While it is true that the audio (uncompressed 48k 16-bit PCM) is barely above bootleg quality and the video is grainy and contains some ticks and scratches, this movie captures the group in their prime and is valuable to those interested in the early 70's period -- especially those of us that were too young to see them live.

The camera work is good and captures, in colorful, moody closeups, each band member doing their thing. At several points in some of the songs ('Close To The Edge' in particular) images of microbial life are introduced, enhancing the organic qualities of the music.

The musical performance is excellent with especially good guitar work from Steve Howe.

While certainly not a candidate for showing off your new DVD player to your friends, Yessongs is a valuable document of the group in the early 70's.

Movie Review: Bad Cameraman, bad special effects, but good music.
Summary: 3 Stars

The problem was (and it is now sometimes) that who has the camera does not know the music, when Steve is playing, the camera take Chris, the special effects showing stupid things instead the show, are so bad, I think the director never thought about the documental value of the film in the future.
The editorial says that the dvd was taken from a bad copy of a 16 mm film, where is the original? I can not believe that they don't couldn't it.
I think the show is not complete ~70 min. But anyway it is a good dvd if you like to see Yes in December 1972.
Yessong it is not Steve Howe, ... is from Yes.
you can not found it easy serching for yes dvds.
Also the Editorial says that it is one of the two discs available, it is not correct, there is a complete show (2 dvd) Yes / Live 1975 at QPR (Japan I think)
NTSC DVD Region 0, you can play it anywhere.
... The sonund is not too good, but it is Yes.
