Movie Reviews of Yes - Yessongs

Movie Review: Best you can get from the 70's
Summary: 4 Stars

People shouldn't complain about the sound & picture quality, because it's the best you're going to get for it's time.

There are spectacular performances of "And you & I" and the full version of "Close to the edge". These are some of the first shows with Alan White on drums and he does an admirable job considering the complicated compositions.

Seeing Rick Wakeman in his gold cape ,long blond hair and the circle of keyboards surrounding him is quite something.

I've seen Yes about 10 times and the first was the Topographic tour and the last on was the Rhythm of Life tour. I was (un)fortunate to catch the famous Buggles Drama tour. pee-youuuooo

Movie Review: A Crucial Time Capsule Piece
Summary: 4 Stars

I first saw this concert footage movie back in 1979, at a midnight movie. Although I had always enjoyed Yes, this movie moved them to a new status for me. The songs performed include selections from The Yes Album, Close to the Edge, and Fragile, which I feel was their freshest and most inventive period. Although the sound quality is not what we are used to hearing on a DVD (this sounds like analog quality), and the picture is somewhat grainy, it is a pure reflection of the band in the early 70's, and to my knowledge the only performance recorded on video during the early years. This is something every appreciator of the band should own.

Movie Review: A Good Record of a Great Concert
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a good video record of one of Yes's concerts at their peak of popularity and arguably, their peak of musical greatness. The video and sound quality of the video is good for 1972. Steve Howe is showcased particularly well by this video. My main frustration, and main criticism is the conspicuous lack of justice done to Rick Wakeman; the video didn't even focus on him while he was playing his keyboard solo for Close to the Edge, one of the most memorable solos in progressive rock. Considering how few good videos available of Yes in the 1970's, it's a must-have for major Yes fans.

Movie Review: Better life through digital -- Yessongs' rehabilitation
Summary: 4 Stars

If you are one of those avid Yes fans like me that suffered through the bad sound and poor picture quality of the VHS tape of the Yessongs concert, you will be so happy with this DVD. I was reluctant to buy the DVD because it seemed that all the sonic and video flaws would probably only be more pronounced in DVD. Was I ever wrong! Through digital magic, the concert has been remastered and sounds and looks beautiful. If you love Yes, you'll love this DVD.

Movie Review: Worth getting for any avid Yes fan
Summary: 4 Stars

Although the product is not top-quality photography, the close-ups and clarity are not par to today's technology, or maybe even at that time, this may be the best Yes concert on film in their early years. Yes is one of the most talented groups of musicians and composers of the last 40 years, and continues to tour with original members this year. To me, they did reach their peak of live-performing talent about 15 years after this tour, however.
