Movie Reviews of Yes - Symphonic LiveMovie Review: The best Yes thing ever. Summary: 5 Stars
This is the one we have all waited for. Do not even think twice about it. Buy it NOW! It's so much better than the glut of othere DVD's that we have all purchased like good little consumers. I had not seen the orchestral tour and was approaching this DVD with trepidation. Surely we all remember the dreadful "Symphonic Tributes" to Yes, Genesis, Tull etc... not so this time. The orchestral arrangements are MASTERFUL and the orchestra was tight as can be. I was stunned. If you don't have a lump in your throat during "Close To The Edge" then you must be dead. :-) The band was first rate. Everyone sounds better than they have in years. Truly. And THANK GOD Wakeman is gone. New Keys man Tom Brislin is the best part of this whole show. What a glorious thing to hear all the original parts actually played properly and not the arpeggiated masturbatory approximation we have suffered with for the past 20 years. Just buy the blessed thing.
Movie Review: Its About Time Summary: 5 Stars
Yes with an Orchestra?? Of course.... If you are a Yes fan, this has been a long time coming. The mix (I prefer the DTS, has the best bass range) is wonderful and the animation is a nice addition with the ability to turn it off if you like. The playing is superb (yes, I know its not Bruford, but let's face it , he was only there for a few albums compared to White who went through a lot more with the band) and the absence of Wakeman is noticeable, but the keyboard player plus the orchestra really makes up for this. For the purist this may not do, but for a real prog/Yes fan, it sounds wonderful. Anderson and Howe are totally up to the task (Jon sounds incredible although he is a little flaky on the song intros)The funniest thing is Squires Spandex pants (he still thinks he's 18.)Track selection is marvelous (Even a 'Ritual' performance Mmmmm.)New and old combine nicely here and we get the classics (as always) including 'Long Distance Runaround' and 'And You and I'
Movie Review: This Is What Yes Is All About Summary: 5 Stars
I love to be dazzled and this DVD does that. Even though they did not have a stage set up like they did for their 35th anniversary tour it has the orchestra and the animation visuals throughout the concert that you can choose to view or not.
Like Tsongas, and Montreux, this concert is wonderfully filmed and recorded and is the entire show, not edited down so you can imagine yourself there.
It is a two disc set but the concert is all on disc one. The other disc is just for the extras. I wish there could have been more to the documentary because I just dont want it to end. Some people dont care for that stuff but I love it.
If you are a Yes fan this is a must, but it would be good for someone who wants to get into the band becuase the song selection is good and the performances are great as well. The orchestra adds to the overall effect and I regret not seeing them when they did this tour with local orchestras at each gig.
Movie Review: Just Say "YES" Loudly! Summary: 5 Stars
"Yes" always has an omnipotent presence in concert and their musical talents are amazing. Even Jon Anderson's vocals are nearly the same as they were over thirty years ago. This great concert sounds fantastic in DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. I suggest turning the volume WAY up. The camera work is typical of any concert with lots of (thankfully short) close-ups of the German backing orchestra (they are extremely talented, however). There is a nice ambiance when using an orchestra instead of keyboards and it works very well here. The orchestra members are generally very young, but their intense joy and talent is not lost here. All of Yes's best songs are represented here, almost to every single note ("Ritual" being one example). There's not a lot of flashiness, but each band member has their chance at solo work and the results are perfect. The documentary is just for fun and the bonus video is a nice addition.
Movie Review: MAGIC Summary: 5 Stars
This is pure musical magic, if you love YES like i do this is a must buy problobly the best YES dvd out there. Its yust fantasic, the playing is awsome as you whuld expect when its YES and all but realy wooow this is great. Okay there is no Wakeman, but hes replace man is not bad at all, sometimes i whonder if it is Wakeman jr or somthing. Jon sings as good as he ever have, he sound fantasic and as for Squire, White and Howe they play as good as ever. And the orcestra ads some greatness to the musical magic. The only bad thing is the bonus meterial it whuld easy have fited on disc one a whole extra disc for yust 30 min extra is a litle rediculus if you ask me and they suld have aded more ather then that every thing is great.
A MUST HAVE, IF YOU LOVE YES. If you have never heard any music from YES it is still very recomended becaus its a great introduction to the magic world of YES.
