Movie Reviews of Yes - Symphonic Live

Movie Review: THE MOST ENJOYABLE OF ALL YES DVD'S
Summary: 5 Stars

Firstly, I think the Symphonic Tour was one of the greatest of all Yes tours. And being a Philadelphia (their adopted home town) native, and seeing every Philly Yesshow since 1974--even flying up for every show from my present home in Texas to "keep the streak alive"--this particular DVD strikes a chord in me. The editing and camera work on this DVD is impeccable. Including the cuts to the orchestra members absolutely enjoying the experience and the perfectly behaved Amsterdam audience shots were nice wide angle views of the stage.

The second disc somewhat documents their Philly tour stop at the outdoor orchestra facility, the Mann Music Center (always dreamed they'd play there)---and a peek at the Roger Dean (artist of their album covers) art exhibit, which I attended. All in all, personal memories aside, great DVD.

My favorite feature on the DVD was the "animation on/off"- where you could disable all animation that were interspersed during the show and even eliminates the closing credits during the last couple of minutes of the concert. In other words, just the show and no distractions. Very cool feature.

Highly recommended, especially at Amazon.com's price!!

Movie Review: Revised Versions of Classic Yes
Summary: 5 Stars

This is not one of those orchestrated monstrosities where an orchestra gets paid to riff along with a band (i.e Symphonic Metallica). The music of Yes works well with an orchestra and the band itself is always in charge but never overshadowing the orchestra. A big plus is that the members of Yes seem to understand something about songwriting and arranging moreso than most and the result is surprisingly entertaining and enjoyable, especially the version of Close To The Edge here.
The camera angles are nicely highlighting the different sections of the orchestra at key times during the performance as well as the band and the conductor. Yes share the stage surprisingly well with an orchestra. It at first sounds like the band have turned their instruments down a little more than usual in an effort not to overplay. There is a definite chemistry between band and orchestra here.
This is probably more for diehards than casual fans but well worth it. My only complaint is minor one. I thought some of the fans on the second "making of" disc were a little unecessary and I would've preferred to see more of the band and less about their fan clubs and t-shirt sales, but I can always skip that disc.

Movie Review: Yes, I am amazed
Summary: 5 Stars

I became a Yes fan in my late teens, I am now 49. A friend of mine had some of their albums and turned me on to the progressive rock charms of Yes. I still listen to classics albums such as "Close to the Edge" and "Fragile" from time to time. I was excited to learn that they had video recorded a concert event and recently released it. The other night I sat down and watched the concert in it's entirety and man was I amazed. Jon Anderson's vocals were just as powerful as ever. Steve Howe's guitar prowess is still intact, Chris Squire is still the incredible bass player I learned to love many years ago, and Alan White can still play those skins baby. Although the members of Yes have aged, their musical performance still has a marked vitality that continues to charm. The addition of the European Festival Orchestra offered an incredible enhancement to the live experience that a mere review cannot express. Songs to watch for are: "Starship Troopers", "And You and I", "Long Distance Run Around", and "Roundabout". The DVD is a must have for any Yes fan or fan of progressive rock music in general. Watch and listen to the masters.

Movie Review: A Great Performance
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this tour in Atlanta, Georgia and was extremely dissapointed in the performance due to the sound quality, timing, etc. Well, I'm happy to report that this DVD has restored my faith in this tour and in the whole symphonic concept. The sound is simply incredible, the camera work is superb, and the animated extras are extremely well-done. And, unlike previous animated sequences on Yes videos, these actually add to the experience of the music by following the emotion of each song. I can bring up several examples, but I do not want to give anything away. I recommend watching the DVD once with the animation turned off, and then once again with it turned on (Yes, this is selectable - adding yet another feather in the cap of this DVD). You will not be dissapointed.

We Yes fans have been lucky enough to be exposed to a LOT of new material in recent years. I have been somewhat concerned, in fact, that some of it would start to become diluted. But, with the release of Symphonic Live, there is no signs of this happening in any way.

Buy this DVD and enjoy every minute of it.

Movie Review: EDITING IS GOOD, WELL DONE!
Summary: 5 Stars

I never bought a cd of YES LIVE in concert mostly due to the horrid reviews that they have been given on sites much like amazon.com. Most had nothing to do with the music, it was just horrid editing. I saw this tour (and have seen Yes every tour since 96, and once in 89) so I decided that I would take a chance that they would not botch the editing and would learn from all the mistakes of the past.

I am telling you that they learned from the mistakes, most likely due to the voice of the masses.

This show is done very well. The song AND YOU AND I is just incredible and as far as I am concerned the song that fits perfectly with an orchestra... acutally, it sounds better this way. The other songs sound good with the orchestra, but AND YOU AND I sounds perfect. This song, when I saw them with the orchestra, made the hair stand up on my arm (when people would be quiet that is, the atlanta show was really a quiet concert)

Get this if you have all the [bad]former DVD releases. And if you have been wiating, like me, for a good release. This is it.
