Movie Reviews of Yes - Symphonic LiveMovie Review: The enhancement of an orchestra Summary: 5 Stars
This is my favorite of the Yes DVDs I own (also having Keys to Ascension and House of Yes). The sound quality is phenomenal. The audience is respectful but enthusiastic. I think reviewers here have said plenty.I just want to comment then on the orchestra. I did see this concert live in Philadelphia at an outdoor show, with good seats. I really had a hard time hearing the orchestral parts and found that it didn't really enhance their sound at all. Listening to this concert on this DVD, I hear the contribution that the orchestra truly made. My favorite parts include, for one, the end of the "I Get Up, I Get Down" section of "Close to the Edge". The orchestra just soars with Brislin's organ and Anderson's ethereal vocals, and it gives me chills to hear it. Anytime I listen to the original now, I hear that orchestral part. Another great moment occurs in "Ritual". The middle percussive section is breathtaking with not only four of the band members belting out percussives but the orchestra with the staccato strings. Finally, "Gates of Delirium" just becomes all out WAR in the middle as the band and the orchestra battle out a section that can easily become a muddled mess, but turns into a complex and glorious war. If you do not own another Yes DVD, get this one.
Movie Review: Timeless! Summary: 5 Stars
Get this DVD, find three hours of spare time (some good wine may also come handy), and enjoy the Yes magic: you will be amazed at the quality of this show!
At last the magic and power of Yes performance was caught on DVD with proper quality both of video and audio - the picture and sound are both great, DTS surround track is incredible.
I am not going to give you the details - you will see it yourself, here is just my impression of this magnificent show.
The band is at its best - the musicians are enjoying the show, and the orchestra gives the band as good as it gets, really having a good time on stage. The interaction of the band and the orchestra is a creative one; they complement each other giving Yes music another dimension: just check the brilliant performance of my all-time Yes favorites "The Gates of Delirium" and "Close to the Edge"!
Standing ovation of the audience is its way of sincere appreciation of timeless music and unforgettable evening.
This DVD is an exemplary case when everything's in proper place: excellent performance of the band/orchestra and exceptional quality of DVD itself. This is definitely the best Yes DVD so far.
This DVD is a must - you will enjoy the show over and over again!
Movie Review: The Best Yes DVD so far Summary: 5 Stars
When I first heard that YES was going to tour with an orchestra I was very skeptical about the quality of the orchestra arrangements. Some members of YES tried a few years ago to orchestrate a few songs from the Yes catalog and the result was something like Yanni meets the Moodies with extra Cheese! This DVD has none of that. It is a powerful performance with very appropriate arrangements. The delivery of Gates of Delirium and Ritual are perfect. Tom Brislin is brilliant on keyboards , his stage act reminded me of Patrick Moraz and Keith Emerson. Anderson's voice has never been better, and I can say the same about each one of the guys, they all master their instruments. They band sounds fantastic. I am VERY glad about the option to remove the animations from the concert, the animations just get in the way (I really dislike the KEYS DVD because of that, who wants to see a woman hanging from a cliff when Rick Wakeman is playing the minimoog at the speed of light?). The picture quality is the best I have seen so far for any DVD concert (including Stings newest), the sound is also very well equalized. You can hear orchestra and band perfectly. If you are going to buy only one YES DVD or ANY concert DVD per say make this one your choice.
Movie Review: The Kings of Prog Reign Supreme! Summary: 5 Stars
Yes? Aren't they a 30 plus year old rock dinosaur with a few moldy hits from the seventies? The short answer - no, no, a thousand times no! If that's how you feel about this eminent prog rock band, this DVD will blow all of your preconceptions away. A fresh mix of classic epic masterpieces and new songs from last year's "Magnification," this DVD is Yes music to it's fullest glory. The combination of top musical performances by the band, including guitar maestro Steve Howe and bassist Chris "The Fish" Squire, with the European Festival Orchestra packs a musical punch that will leave you breathless. Yes' music have always had a symphonic sound and you'll be amazed at how the orchestra brings out the real power and impact of their songs. "Close to the Edge" and "Gates of Delerium" stand out in particular. Perhaps the only disappointment is the inclusion of "Roundabout" and "Seen All Good People" in the set - these songs have been played ad nauseum in the past and it would have been nice to see something different as a finale. In a musical landscape dominated by teen pop fluff and angry rock/rap clones, Yes represents an old way of thinking - music as art. So is their music still relevant today? Perhaps more than ever.
Movie Review: Yes we can still ProgRock Summary: 5 Stars
I feel this is the best DVD of Yes so far. Granted is not just Yes but the Orchestra adds to this already great DVD. The picture is fantastic and the sound is very good too. I'm not sure if its my surround's set up right but the drums are low in the mix and that's a shame. Alan is a forgotten drummer and needs to be heard! The bass does kick in from time to time as if its LFE rather Chris's bass? Strange. The DVD also has video clips in certain parts that you can switch to instead of watching the band while the music plays if you want. The young people in the orchestra can certainly play and really get into the music. This adds some life into Jon and band for I'm sure their tried of playing these songs 30 plus years now. Rich Wakeman is not with them on this outing but fear not Tom Brislin is in the house showing how to pound the keys with passion and shake it all while not wearing a white robe. Get this a soon as you can. Technology has made it so I can relive my glory years with some many amazing bands on DVD like Kansas,Rush,REO,BOC,Wishbone Ash and King Crimson to name only a few. Now my kids will believe me when I show them the awesomeness of the 60' and 70' era bands. Err probably not! :)
