Movie Reviews of Yes - Symphonic LiveMovie Review: A Symphony of Sound Summary: 5 Stars
As a true Yes fan, this DVD is a musical experience that just cannot be missed. Are our maestros flawless? No. But then, we have come to understand that Yes pioneered the epic musical formula that married classical with rock music. It is their writing ability that sets them apart from any other rock group. To take a simple melody, such as the one that comes from their signature piece 'Close To The Edge' and develop several movements is nothing less than pure musical genius. The production, camera work and sound quality is superb indeed. And the orchestra enhanced the music to a new and refreshing level of listening pleasure. The songs that most benefited from the orchestral arrangements are 'Close To The Edge', 'Ritual', 'Gates of Delerium', and 'And You and I'. These works are treasures that have been preserved for us fans for all time. Yea!! The "Magnification' material is fine, but it's obvious to any Yes fan that this material falls short of the early Yes greats anyway. The orchestra was transparent in 'I've Seen All Good People' but added a nice touch in 'Starship Trooper' and 'Long Distance Runaround'. Alan's percussion performance is simply awesome as so is his exhuberant performance. Steve's performance was great. But we all, have seen him dumb down his guitar licks through the years. Chris's enthusiasm always adds to the frontmen the most aggresive playing while always giving us what we want, that stylish ricky sound. Their vocal performance was excellent and if we want to be totally honest, Tom on keys did a fantastic job. Sure we would of loved to have seen Rick there, but close your eyes and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. 'Ritual' is a songwriting accomplishment that worked best with the orchestra. The lyric and progressive melody are simply beautiful when backdroped against the warm colors of the symphony and then transitioning to an all out percussive fest. All in all, the entire concert is a splendid blending of orchestral rock themes that make this perhaps one of Yes' greatest concerts on video to date.
Movie Review: This DVD brings me chills! Summary: 5 Stars
First off, only 5 stars!?!?! Let me put down 100 out of 5 stars!I have been elevated to a new level of musical appreciation and joy that I never thought possible before! I have seen YES 11 times in the last four years, and their Symphonic Tour is no exception when I say there never has been such an amazing band! When I learned that YES was coming out with a DVD release of one of their symphonic performances, I was it absolute ecstasy knowing I would have the opportunity to watch over and over and over again a concert during a tour which brought me tears when I saw them perform live. First off, major kudos to Tom Brislin. I have been one of the hugest fans of Wakeman since the 70's, but as much as I missed Rick on this (and other) tours, I thought that Brislin did a phenomenal job! Jon, always the voice of an angel! Steve, a master of guitar . . . although he does look a little bit stiff and too serious at times. Chris, he is a monster on the bass! I'm sure that when he walks into music stores, the bass guitars quiver with fear. Rarely will you ever see someone rock a guitar like that Mr. Squire! Alan, one of the most consistently perfect drummers ever! He's not the fanciest of drummers (e.g. like Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater), but he is consistently, consistently perfect in what he does! A buddy of mine is a professional drummer and he says the same thing! I am reticent to mention a highlight about this dvd because *ALL* of it is beyond outstanding. I have chills every time I watch it, it's that moving. However, if I *had* to cite a highlight, I would have to say the drum section in "Ritual." One of my favorite all-time songs anyway, but they took this song to a whole new level! If you're going to be stranded on a desert island and you have only one dvd, make it this one! May YES continue to live healthily and happily and continue to bring pure joy to so many millions of fans! Thank you, YES.
Movie Review: Surprisingly excellent live show Summary: 5 Stars
As a long-time Yes fan I was quite hesitant to purchase this DVD; The absence of Rick Wakeman plus the inclusion of a symphony orcehstra seemed out of place and I suspected the show might be a bit pathetic. After a good friend recommended this I did purchase it and was absolutely surprised by the superb quality of the DVD - sound, track selection and overall performance. What is really great here is that this is an over 2.5 hour show that really covers their entire history; tracks from all classic albums - yes album, close to the edge, fragile, topographic oceans, relayer and later songs (owner of the lonley heart) and they are all performed by great musicians in excellent shape. Rick Wakeman is missed here but his young replacement does a great job, so you can focus on the other four. All are great - but personally I always looked at Steve Howe as the main power behind the band and as modern Rock's greatest guitarist, so for Howe's fans it's a real delight, especially his acoustic solo parts of 'mood for a day' and the movement from Vivaldi's lute concerto. The 3 tracks that I would rank as amazing are Close to the edge, Starship trooper and 'And you and I'; All other tracks are great too but on these 3 I really had a shiver when I saw these nearly 60 year old guys perform as they do...
As for the orchestra - luckily they are very mild and really contribute only in the background and do not steal the show; You can also see the players really enjoy the show - as the band members do. One last word about the DVD editing - it's excellent and it's the way a music DVD should be presented; The bonus DVD is a bit weak but who cares when you have such a great show by such a great band. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: Yes!!! Yes!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw Yes live twice. Once at a small college theater with a packed house of about 2000 early Yes fans. This was the Yes Album tour and acoustics were perfect. Steve Howe burning up the fretboard with the zeal of a musician playing hot new music for the first time in concert. This was the original line up before Wakeman and all his classical influence. Some of which was truly great. Some of which needed more work. This concert had Squire and Bruford keeping time in a more free form Jazz Rock Fusion Billy Cobham/Stanley Clarke type of style. Anderson layered his folk rock melodies over the top of this fusion stew keeping it warm and inviting to the average rock listener. They played long extended versions of all the songs on the Yes Album. This show is definately in my top ten concert list. The second time I saw them was at a 1970's Mega Show touring for Fragile. This time with Wakeman. This show had a totally different feeling. A totally great feeling. They went from a jazz folk rock band into a classical folk rock band. A big fat layered keyboard sound building up to dizzying crescendos. I had to share this one with about 20 thousand in a stadium. The sound wasn't that great until I was about 50 feat from the stage. Of course it got better once I made by way to the front. Yes crowds were very polite. Compared to getting to the front of a Deep Purple or LZ concertSaw this new Yes DVD at a friends and thought it was really good. Agree there is to much editing and Howe should have be brought up. All in All it still gives chills to hear the old classics once more.
