Movie Reviews of Yes 9012 LiveMovie Review: Oh YES! a Brilliant DVD at last. Summary: 5 Stars
Unlike most of the reviews here.....I have actually seen this DVD and can comment with an informed view!
This show rocks!
First, there is a small paragraph in the credits that mentions the fact that the original masters for this concert had been lost and much time and effort was placed in reworking the sound.
Well, indeed they have, and perfectly; as the 5.1 sound is absolutely fantastic! The picture is clear and sharp. And best of all, - the viewer can watch the 'non charlex' version with the push of the DVD remote button.
Incidently, the very dated 'charlex' effects which were the result of Steven Soderburg's authorship have been labelled by many as the low point of the original video. To actually have the option of removing those dated, black-and-white and colourised movie clips from an otherwise outstanding concert is a god-send. In actual fact, the viewer is subsequently able to see even more camera angles and shots than were available even when the charlex features weren't running.
Like many, for some years, I had to make do with that horrible Brazillian DVD which had both mono sound and a lousy, fuzzy picture. This release has been like a breath of fresh air and has given me a greater appreciation of this particular part in YES history. Some folk have never warmed to YES-West. Too bad! They have missed some brilliant, high energy and furious tempo playing. This DVD brings out the raw impact of a special group of musicians, set amongst the popularity of the world stage for the first time.
Extras include 'Roundabout' performed on the same night and for whatever reason, left off the original video. Also included are interviews and behind-the-scenes views of the men whilst back-stage and in transit between venues. Again, this is a look at a part of YES history and is worth it to see them again, as they were in 1984.
My only complaint would be that this DVD wasn't released in such high quality, many years ago.
However, it was worth the wait!
When you purchase this DVD, (as you should) you won't bother with the old video and charlex effects. You'll be like me and opt for the full concert and enjoy the clear view; time after time.
Movie Review: The Very Best of YES Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this concert on MTV during the '80s. I also recorded it on VHS Beta. It was my pride and joy, no one had a copy, all my friends wanted it. Then a fine looking female friend of mine got to my heart and ran away with my YES live from Edmonton tape. I never saw her again or my YES tape. Let me just say all bandmembers who have played in YES over the years, as there have been a few, are all the best.....I like Steve Howe and Trevor Rabin, this seems to be a big conflict with YES fans. My first YES album I bought was in the discount stack at Kmart in 1968 for $2.99, and I had some 8 track tapes, then the cassettes and finally I started recording and mixing. Yeah, mixing...mixing YES with other groups, but YES is the best in live concert....I recently recorded live from Tsongas from a local PBS station that ran the concert at 3'am in the morning, Ha-Ha-?? I set the timer on the VHS and then dumped it my hard drive and burned to DVD, it was not too bad. The copy of 90125live from MTV during the '80s came out great......now one must also have a good sound system and tv to play these concerts. Oh, by the way I think Tony Kaye is better than Rick Wakeman or the sound engineer does not like Rick much.....I just watched a store bought copy of Songs from Tsongas for the 50th time, I have to constantly adjust the sound to hear Rick, I have a 1200 watt 9 channel sound system, no I am not playing it that loud!!! I live in Palm Coast, Florida and Ted Canty lives down the road. Ted is personal friends with Jon, Ted has things I have never seen and I will ...leave it ...there.....Everyone buy Yes and enjoy there great music.....John A Galloway
Movie Review: It Can Happen! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm one of those people who like this line-up of Yes the best, even after hearing all the albums. I also consider the 1994 Yes album TALK, which was this line-up's last, to be a flat-out masterpiece.. too bad the record buying public didn't catch on, although it still out-sold anything Yes put out after it. So I was of course very excited in this DVD release, and it definatly does not disappoint. You get loads of interviews and back-stage shinanigans, and lots of candid moments, such as Rabin discussing "City Of Love" with White and Kaye, complaining that the soloing goes on for too long: Rabin- "I don't wanna play that!" White- "Then don't." The concert, as others have stated, isn't presented here in its true length, but you do get Roundabout as an extra. And if you don't want to watch the 80's video effects, you don't have to: watch the alternate version of the concert in the Special Features section. All in all, extremely well done all the way around. Hears hoping this line-up can reform someday soon.
Movie Review: Not Your Average Concert Video Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a fan of YES for years. And yes, they have gone through many phases. This concert was captured during their more pop oriented phase, with Trevor Rabin and much of the original lineup. All of the band is in fine form, and some of the songs, particularly "Hold On" and "Starship Trooper" really take off.
What makes this video special is that is was directed by Steven Soderburgh, before Sex, Lies, and Videotape and all of the big movies he has since become known for. So it is not just a straight on concert video, where there are four or five cameras capturing the action. Instead, there are numerous special effects that add to the repeat viewing of the concert.
The video itself has been released numerous times...first on VHS, then on Laserdisc, and finally on a Brazillian DVD, which was adequate. This pressing adds additional songs, clearer video, and better sound.
So, if you are a fan of this somewhat flashier period of YES, you will certainly not be disappointed.
Movie Review: Fantastic Concert!!! Summary: 5 Stars
As usually, Amazon.com came through for me yet again. What a concert! Great is not enough of a word to describe this one of a kind concert with all that cool 50s Americana footage. Awesome special effects!
I had taped this many years ago and LOST THE FRIGGIN TAPE!!! I was so angry whenever I thought about it because I really remember liking that concert tremendously. Now it has returned to me better than ever.
For true Yes fans: Prepare yourselves for a treat!
