Movie Reviews of Yellow Submarine

Movie Review: Absolutely terrific and the fab-gearest
Summary: 5 Stars

They won't allow me to award more than five stars! A gem from the half-forgotten world of the psychedelic Sixties, starring those longhaired lads from Liverpool who, naturally, must save the world from the nasty music haters. Gentle allegory, playful punfest, and trippy music video all rolled into one; like The Wizard of Oz, this is a great film for the young and the young at heart alike. Buy this for your little kids when they ask who the Beatles were, and they'll thank you. For those of us who sailed through these Monstrous Seas with the Fabs, all those years ago, this movie is like a wind from another time and place, holding the echoes of the past, which never die.

Oh -- the DVD version is pretty dang nifty. Finally pushed me into taking the format plunge. Can I send the bill for my player to Apple?

Movie Review: THE BEATLES AT THEIR BEST
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of (if not the best) Beatles movie ever made. It really captures that turning point in the Beatles career when the band was starting to branch out from each other and explore their own (musical) interests. Musically, you get a little bit of everything in this film, the palette ranging from the wistfulness of "Nowhere Man" to the jubilation of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".I just cannot say enough good things about this film: I recommend not just to Beatles fans but any fan of great music and cinema. The animation is flawless and pairs sixties yellowish tones with plain white to create sequences that have never been able to be duplicated. Everyone should see this film: it was the marker of an era in time, one of the greatest bands of all time, and was long due for a restoration!

Movie Review: Words Misheard from Mrs. Malaprop
Summary: 5 Stars

Jeremy Boo saying "...ad hoc, ad loc and *crypto quo*/so little time, so much to know." It is NOT "...crypto quo..." for those of you who missed your Latin lessons. It is "quid pro quo" which means "The concept of getting something of value in return for giving something of value." In any case Dr. Boo is quoting Latin cliches to sound more erudite and smarter than he is.

And Mrs. Malaprop..."A malapropism is an incorrect usage of a word by substituting a similar-sounding word with different meaning, usually with comic effect." Such as that famous line not by Jimi Hnedrix, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy" instead of the real lyrics "Excuse me while I kiss the sky."

Other than that, Yellow Submarine is one of those true classics that should not be missed.

Movie Review: "Fab"ulous!
Summary: 5 Stars

I know this film has been reviewed to death, and its finer points have been covered very thoroughly, but I simply must add that this is one of the most enjoyable DVDs my family has ever seen. I was a tad concerned that my kids (ages 5 and 7), having cut their teeth on computer-animated films, wouldn't appreciate the two-dimentional animation of Yellow Submarine, but my worries were unfounded - they love it. Some of the dialog is beyond their comprehension, but the colors, motion, and music are more than enough to hold the interest of a child. And what music! You cannot be a Beatles fan and not love this movie. Beware - I think some of the more psychedelic scenes could give an epileptic a grand mal, but this is truly a must-own for the fervent Beatles fan with children (and maybe without).

Movie Review: IN THE TOWN WHERE I WAS BORN...
Summary: 5 Stars

Ahhh Yellow Submarine. That song came out when I was 11 in 1966. My daughter, who is 11 now, knows the lyrics AND who recorded that classic. (I wonder if she'll be listening to Jesse McCartney in 40 years, as I'm still listening to Paul McCartney). This is a wonderful film, although not something that "tweenies" may enjoy - as it lacks the slam / bang and glitz that they may be accustomed to. The remastered soundtrack on 5:1 is great. Especially the classical pieces that were provided by George Martin. Most people know that the voices were performed by actors and not the Beatles, but they (The Beatles) make an appearance near the end of the film. There are sufficient extras including some rare footage of the Fabs to make this a good addition to any fans' collection. Recommended.
