Movie Reviews of Yellow SubmarineMovie Review: A Couple of Flaws on DVD but otherwise Five Stars Summary: 5 Stars
First off, let me say the DVD print is amazing - the colours are beautiful and the sound quality is first rate too. No complaints there, and the extras are not bad at all. Some people have critized the audio commentary by John Coates, saying he's boring, etc, but I personally found him quite charming to listen to. However, there is a big flaw at the 0:25:44 mark, where the 2 channel original mono mix becomes stereo till the 0:42:18 mark. Also I'm not sure if the image is framed properly as even though there is a bit more visible image at the left and bottom of the frame, the top of the image seems to crop the tops of heads at times (I have the VHS version to compare it to). This is quite noticeable during the re-added 'Hey Bulldog' sequence. At the 1:19:29 mark of the movie, during 'Hey Bulldog', John's & Paul's heads pop out of the top of the piano and out of the top of the frame too, whereas they don't on the full-frame video version! Still, especially when compared to the horribly botched recent re-release of the Beatles' classic movie "A Hard Day's Night" on DVD by Mirimax (you want a butchered fake widescreen image and bad sound, you've got it) this Beatles' Yellow Submarine DVD is definitely worth buying. The movie itself is a classic and even with the flaws I've mentioned I have to give it a full FIVE stars.
Movie Review: Not Easy To Find, But Still Easy To Love Summary: 5 Stars
Even though I don't like this movie quite as much as "The Adventures of Mark Twain," it's without question a mind-blowing experience. The stills at the end may be the best use of imagery I've ever seen in a visual presentation. I'm sure we can thank Heinz Edelmann for that.
The rest of the movie is almost as incredible, and my only complaint is the sequences with the meanies at the end seem to drag out too long. One would think that once the Beatles reach Pepperland, there's not much movie left. It's sort of the same feeling I had when I read Homer's "The Odyssey."
The animation isn't even as close to being as smooth as Disney's, but the wide variety of color displayed is beyond belief. The surreal imagery doesn't disappoint even those with high imaginative expectations, and the fun use of non-sensical dialgoue adds even more to the imagery. The little Jeremy fellow looks like he walked right off one of the pages of "The Phantom Tollbooth."
Although I was let down by the "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" musical montage after being wowed by the other montages, they do a pretty good job of treating the eye as well as the ear. Some I've watched over and over.
A must for anyone who is really into fantasy.
Movie Review: A Classic! Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, please get the DVD (buy a DVD player if you have too, it's worth it!). Once you've got that done, you're made in the shade! This is THE BEST of the Beatles movies by far. First of all, the music. It's great, and ten billion times better digitally remastered and sounds great on a DVD system. You really need either fifty different speakers hidden around your living room (or headphones, for the financially challenged, like me) to truly appreciate the sound. Second, the art. It's amazing, I've never seen anything like it since. It's even more amazing in it's restored clarity. It's very 60s! Third, the story. Very trippy and freeflowing, reminiscent of "Alice in Wonderland". It's filled with little jokes and puns to keep you on your toes. Finally (and the reason I got it), it's got "Hey Bulldog"! This segment alone is worth $25. It's also got several other restored sequences, plus your usual DVD extras (trailers, documentary, interview). Another cool feature is you can watch the movie with music only. It's amazing! Nothing quite like it, do yourself a favor and get this one. Don't forget the songtrack too! It's got all the songs featured in the movie in remastered form.
Movie Review: "What's the matter fellas? Blue Meanies?" Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
Ignore the fact I am an obsessive Beatle fan (my parents -- including the owner of this account, aka my dad, would glare at me). THis is honestly a spectacular movie. I suppose you have to "know" the four to really get some things they say -- they refrence their songs like, every five seconds ("This place reminds of Blackburn, Lancashire." "Oh boy." And then, "4000 holes to fill the Albert Hall." -- all referencing 'A Day In The Life'). But it doens't matter.
THis movie is VERY FUNNY. Honestly, I was cracking up throughout the entire things. They chose excellent songs in it ('All Together Now' is something I'll start randomly singing) and quotes are memorable ones ("And I've got a hole in my pocket." "Ah... a hole?!" "Well, half a hole anyway. I gave the other half to Jeremy." "... what can he do with half a hole?" et cetera).
I love this movie. My dear Beatles-obessesed friend who knows EVERY LAST DETAIL ABOUT THEM loves this movie. My mom loves this movie, and, though she likes the Beatles, is mad at me for continually talking about them. My litlte brother loves this movie. JUST GET THE MOVIE.
Movie Review: I bought a DVD player because of this release... Summary: 5 Stars
I am really sorry that this version of Yellow Submarine has gone out of print. When it came out in 1999, I had not yet purchased a DVD player, but I did immediately buy the VHS version. It was so wonderful, SO wonderful, and I read so many great reviews about the DVD, that I went out and bought the DVD, before I had a DVD player. Then not only did I buy a DVD player but also a new Kenwood receiver so I could get all the benefits of the surround sound. That's how crazy I was. The really crazy thing is, it was worth every penny. Plus it spoiled me. I expected every DVD release to show the same care and quality that Yellow Submarine did. The care that they lavished upon all aspects of this release, the video quality, the INCREDIBLE AUDIO QUALITY and the wonderful extras, are amplified by the horrible job that Miramax did on A Hard Day's Night. It's a shame that Apple could not was not able to get control of that. What a disgrace Miramax made of a classic. Makes me wonder what is happening with HELP!, Magical Mystery Tour and Let It Be. I pray daily that Miramax isn't able to get their grubby little hands on anymore Beatle product.
