Movie Reviews of Yellow SubmarineMovie Review: Masterful restoration of 60's Classic Summary: 5 Stars
After reading the New York Times article about the restoration process for Yellow Submarine, I had high hopes for this DVD. I was not disappointed. The color saturation is sumptuous. There are some imperfections, but on the whole this is a first class restoration. If you want appreciate the restoration, look at the original theatrical trailer or the "making of" documentary extras. The re-mastered audio brings new complexity and detail to familiar Beatle material (even on my strictly middlebrow home entertainment system). The opening a cappella chorus of "Nowhere Man" sounded like it was recorded yesterday. For a generation that has not seen this film, Yellow Submarine is a perfect time capsule for 60's psychedelic era. The film begins in under the sea in Pepperland, an idyllic musical community, which is attacked by the music-hating Blue Meanies. "Young Fred" manages to escape the attack in the Yellow Submarine, which takes him to England. He recruits the Beatles to return with him to Pepperland to join the battle between the forces of order (the Blue Meanies) and the forces of creativity and love. The plot is pretty much as hokey as it sounds, but it is merely a vehicle for the music, humor, surrealism, artistic and social sensibilities of the psychedelic 60's. And it is there that the movie emphatically succeeds. The animation is certainly not as sophisticated as some more modern efforts, but it stands up remarkably well. There was a lot of revolutionary (for the 60's) integration of animation and live action. The colors are gorgeous. Visually, this is still a very entertaining film. If you don't like the Beatles music, or are bored by animation, stay away. If you are on the fence about getting this DVD, buy it. You won't be disappointed. And if you love the Beatles, this DVD should move to the top of your list.
Movie Review: We all live in a yellow submarine!!!!=D Summary: 5 Stars
"Once upon a time, or maybe twice there was an unearthly paridise called pepper land. 80,000 leages beneath the sea it lay, or lie. I'm not too sure." Now one fine day the unearthly paradise of pepper land got taken over by the blue meanies. Lord mayor of pepper land sent old fred out in the yellow submarine to go find help. Well old fred meets ringo and states " H is for hurry, E for urgent, L for love me,and P for please help."
Well after old fred and the beatles are in the sea or the ocean or whatever they go through the sea of time and become younger. Like waaaaay younger. After they overcome that issue they become older. Waaaaay older. They deal with this problem and pass through the sea of science.
After this they go through the sea of mosters, and get sucked up by the vacum monster. They then are magicaly no longer sucked up. They meet the nowhere man Jeremy, who ringo feels bad for. Jeremy gets to come with them. I think he deserves it considering he fixed the motor.
Well, then the sub. breaks down in the foothills of the headlands. They (now minus old fred. Thanks jeremy.)find a bunch of pepper and get sneezed out of there and into the sea of holes. After looking around they finaly find the hole that leads to the sea of green.
Well pepper land is in the sea of green so they've finaly made it to pepper land.
The beatles impersonate sgt.peppers lonely hearts club band, and bring color back to pepper land.
Jeremy reads poetry to the chief blue meanie and turns him good, which turns all the other meanies good. They sing it's all too much, and all is well.
Movie Review: One of animation's best movies. Summary: 5 Stars
In an imaginary world of pepperland where it lies under the sea, peace and harmony has reign the land until a race of blue fiends called Blue Meanies ravage everywhere leading to a captain on a magic yellow submarine up to the surface. There he teams up with the fab four known as John, Ringo, George and Paul to head back on a journey as they encounter strange lands, meet unusual people like the Nowhere Man and try to restore peace once more.
A psychedelic, original and imaginative animated fantasy musical gem that is the 60's answer to "Fantasia". This UK import features the music of the Beatles themselves but not their voices even though the real Beatles in live-action appear at the end, you don't have to be a stoner to enjoy this movie. The animation is phenomenal with LSD inspired imagery and a great sense of Monty Python style humor, this movie has became a beloved cult animated classic over the years and still popular as ever. I loved this since i was a kid in the 80's and still do, it's one of my favorite animated movies that introduced me to the Beatles.
This DVD is fantastic giving off great picture and sound plus the film restored in a director's cut with a never before seen sequence that was cut out of the original version. Great extras like commentary, isolated score, documentary, storyboard sequence, trailer, interviews, pencil drawings and photo gallery.
If you like animation or the Beatles, get this movie.
Movie Review: A reverse hero quest Summary: 5 Stars
When this film first came out in '68 I found it unwatchable. I thought that it was mind-less, plot-less eye candy. Now, after nearly four decades I finally get it- this is a reverse hero quest.
You have old/young Fred, captain of his magical vessel, voyaging to our world in a desperate search for help. He comes from the unearthly paradise of Pepperland (the paradise of the Devas) which has been treacherously conquered by the Blue Meanies (Asuras.) He finds the earthly manifestations of the champions of his realm (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) on our earth in the form of...the Beatles. Together they voyage back across the seas that separate the two planes (including the Sea of Monsters.) Once they have won their way back, they use the power of music to restore the land through joy and love. That's the twist- in a traditional tale it would be a hero from earth who traveled to the supernatural realms to win a boon for mankind, while here it is a hero from the otherworld that traveled here for help. That's also kind of neat- the angelic coming to us for help for a change.
Perhaps now that our own world is so completely overrun with Blue Meanies Pepperland might send us help in our time of need. It would make an interesting sequel.
The restoration of this film is incredible. It is a visual feast for the eyes with its vivid, intricate, original artwork- and the sound could not be better. Together they make perfect alchemy.
Movie Review: Beatles -yellow submarine-DVD Movie Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a fan of the Beatles since their first appearance into the states so many years ago. And even since their break-up in 1970, I have enjoyed their music as individual performers. As a child, I watched their animated TV show and enjoyed singing along with them, as did many other of their fans who also watched it. When Yellow Sumarine came to the matinee in my home town, of course I was amongst the other kids to see it. And even over the years, when it first became available on VHS, I purchased it so my own children could watch it. My recent purchase of Yellow Submarine on DVD, I still enjoy and share now with my grandchildren. They have enjoyed it too. The artistry, amagination of the storyline, the music, certainly evokes a great deal of enjoyment to myself, my children, my grandchildren, and to all the Beatles' fans from the past, present, and will to those in the future. Their music contributions over these many years have been enjoyed by so many millions of music fans and will continue most probably for many more years to come. I am very pleased and proud to add this Beatles - Yellow Submarine DVD to my ever growing Beatle / Paul McCartney / John Lennon / Ringo Starr / George Harrison, collection of DVD's and Music CD Albums, to share with my family often. Thank you for asking me to summit a review. A sincere fan of the Original Beatles (the group) and all as Solo Artists - Teresa Hatley of Fenton, Missouri, USA.
