Movie Reviews of Year of the Dragon

Movie Review: Highly Unappealing
Summary: 2 Stars

I feel compelled to write this review in light of the glowing commentary provided by some other customers. I found this movie unpleasant to say the least. Though it had some interesting ideas, there was not a single appealing character in the film. While some might call this "realism," to me this was just poor scripting. I've seen films that made unpleasant people who are still appealing characters (such as the Usual Suspects or Resevoir Dogs) but this movie couldn't even make a "tough policeman" type appealing. I cannot deny that the up-in-arms attitude of many Asian American groups towards this film are uncalled for, but at the same time I found it self indulgent, dull, and, as my title says, highly unappealing. Though I'm apparently in the minority in this view (judging by the other customer reviews) I feel obliged to make it known, and to mention that everyone who I watched this with agreed with me. I guess I'm trying to say that this movie isn't for every one. :)

Movie Review: The Year of the Dragon is a drag!!
Summary: 1 Stars

When I saw this film in a multiplex I was so turned off by Cimino's over-wrought direction and the unsympathetic character played by the usually excellent Mickey Rourke--that I went into another theater and saw something else. Could this be the same director who several years before, won the Oscar for "The Deer Hunter"?! It was rumored that Robert DeNiro was offered the part and turned it down and for good reason--Stanley White, the main character, is a bigot and ex-Vietnam veteran who is suppose to be the character we are suppose to be sympathetic with. Months after this film I did read the original novel by Robert Daley and Stanley White was much more sympathetic character than what wound up on the screen. In fact Daley asked the producers to take his name off the credits of the movie since it bore very little resemblance to the story he wrote. It's bizarre when you find yourself rooting for the villain of the piece, the excellent John Lone as Joey Tai, than the main character. If you like Mickey Rourke as I normally do, then rent "The Pope of Greenwich Village", "Barfly", "A Prayer for the Dying" and "Johnny Handsome" or better yet see his Oscar nominated "The Wrestler". Any of these films are worth seeing rather than seeing this crap!!

Movie Review: Did Mickey Rourke write the rest of the reviews here?
Summary: 1 Stars

What's the difference between this movie and a Schwarzenneger movie? Answer: A Schwarzenneger movie has better dialogues, a better plot, and better acting.
How could the guy who made Deer Hunter come up with this dud? More intriguing still, how can anybody say anything nice about this colossal disappointment.
