Movie Reviews of Year of the DogMovie Review: Coping with the loss of a pet. Summary: 5 Stars
{"Absurd and Elegant, and Hysterical and Sad"}
...That is how this movie was described in the special features on the disk, and they sure hit it dead on the money!!
I thought this was a wonderful and heartfelt movie.
I really came to care about, and have a lot of empathy for Molly Shannon's character.
In this movie she plays a woman who is a dog owner, and her dog is just ADORABLE !!!
His name is "Pencil".
One night she gets mad at Pencil because he won't come in, so she makes him sleep outside.
Horrible decision!!! The dog gets into some poison and dies.
Anyone who has ever loved thier pet, and lost it will TOTALLY identify with her loss, and her grief.
She gets another dog, and gets involved in helping abused animals. She also becomes a vegan, because of the cruelty to animals, and goes on a sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking journey of self discovery.
Regina King (who I ADORE) plays her best friend, and adds a lot of humor to the movie.Laura Dern plays her annoying sister-in-law. Although she is annoying, she (and all of the characters in this movie) comes across FRESH...and so does the whole story. It is very original, like a breath of fresh air.
In short, it is one dog lovers journey from the loss of a pet, to getting involved adopting out animals in need, to finally devoting her whole life to it.I know there are people in the real world that do this; devote thier life like this, to this wonderful cause, and I so admire them for it.
If you are an animal lover (ecpecially dogs)...you are in for a wonderful treat !
Movie Review: More than a movie about dogs... Summary: 5 Stars
There's at least one person you know that is obsessed with something, whether it be themselves, their children, their spouse/mate, their work, their hobby of collecting things, their cleanliness or heck, yes even their pets.
This is not just a movie about dogs, it's a movie about people and how they can get so preoccupied, involved and in love with something in their own little world, they don't pay too much attention to the world around them until something tragic happens. This is that movie.
"Year of the Dog" is a funny comedy, but it's also takes a sad, albeit realistic, look at how a person's love for an animal can affect their whole life and they not even notice it until later. It's a truthful drama about Molly Shannon's character Peggy whose dog Pencil dies one day and she is forever affected by this, negatively and positively.
What ensues in the movie is a lesson on how much love a pet (or just substitute another person/hobby here) can be given and how much a person hold dear to that pet. One watches Peggy and her life, and just sympathizes with her, if not empathize too because we all have that "pet" in our lives that affects us too.
Shannon does a wonderful job portraying Peggy, and appearances by Peter Sarsgaard, John C. Reilly, Regina King and Laura Dern are just as effective and pulls you into this little world of hers. Some scenes are tear-jerkers and some are LOL, overall highly recommended :) "Year of the Dog" is a good movie that has a bit of soul, very nice characters and just a human(e) story.
Movie Review: A Valuable Lesson About the Human Heart Summary: 5 Stars
I consider _Year of the Dog_ to be one of the year's best films, but not, perhaps, for everybody. Only those who have lived closely to animals or those who are capable of unselfish sympathy will be able to recognize and appreciate the subtleties of this film. Yet, for those who can appreciate it, it is very worthwhile, and for those who cannot, perhaps they will learn something valuable.
Molly Shannon plays an introverted single woman who lives alone with her dog, whom she loves dearly. One day, the dog gets dies unexpectedly, which, of course, has an immense impact on the woman. This is not, however, a movie about one woman's loss, but about the implications of having a truly caring soul. Shannon's character becomes an exploration of the many paths down which such a love can lead us.
Those who care about animals will find this movie to be a sensitive, uncomfortably realistic echo of their own thoughts and experiences. (Finally, a movie portrays animal rights activists as real people with legitimate goals.) Funny at times, heart-rending at others, at other times both, this is a film not only about animals, but the impact they have on those who care for them. It is a film that could change your life.
Movie Review: Molly Shannon shines in this underappreciated character study. Summary: 5 Stars
Mike White delivers his feature film directorial debut with YEAR OF THE DOG, one of 2007's best films.
Molly Shannon plays Peggy, a well to do lady who loves animals very, very much. When her dog dies of poisoning, she delves into depression and her friends try to encourage her to get out. Well, she does, and she meets Newt, who just so happens to work at a pet adoption agency. She falls in love, only to find out that he is a celibate homosexual. From there on, she spirals into a frenzy, becoming an avid vegan and pet activist. Her behavior becomes both disturbing and darkly hilarious. You'll have to see the rest yourself...
Molly Shannon was overlooked for Oscar consideration for her performance, as was Mike White's direction and screenplay. Paramount Vantage did an extremely sucky job of marketing this film, but that shouldn't stop any one from checking out this gem of a film. Excellent in every way, and I recommend it!
Movie Review: Delightful and LIfe-Affirming Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this film last night and could not stop laughing or crying. I felt it was overall very life-affirming and sweet as well as being very, very funny. Of course, if you are an activist, you would enjoy the nuances and humor more.
I am dismayed by some of the negative reviews. I did not see her character as being "negative" at all. She was lost and looking for purpose and probably a bit lonely, too but she has a huge heart. I found her to be very lovable and endearing. She is just part of the human condition.
I left having a warm feeling in my heart. How great to have a movie made about a real person who has feelings...not some hyped up Glamour woman. I liked how the focus of the movie was not about the outsides of this woman's life but her insides...which made it all the more interesting. Thank you for making this delightful film...we need more of them.
