Movie Reviews of XXX (Unrated Director's Cut)Movie Review: A New Breed of Secret Agent Summary: 4 Stars
What happens when you cross a little James Bond, extreme sports, Vin Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson, and the director of "Fast and the Furious", you get a fun-loving adventure film called, "xXx".
"xXx" starts with the CIA discovering that their current stock of secret agents are unable to get undercover with a new gang of international terrorists. The terrorists enjoy spending their time at a trendy dance club, enjoying fast cars, and even faster women. With no hope of placing one of the current CIA agents into this organization, Special Agent Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson), decides to begin recruiting some "new talent" that would fit in to the terrorist's world. Enter Xander Cage (Vin Diesel), an extreme sports junky that hosts his own extreme show, The Xander Zone. After clashing with the law one to many times, earning him the three strikes penalty that will surely land him in prison, Gibbons offers Xander an opportunity to repay his country for the freedom he enjoys by inserting himself into the world of this terrorist organization, while trying to discover what exactly they are planning.
"xXx" is by no means a replacement to the 007 films, but it is an entertaining alternative for the new generation. With plenty of action and explosions, even a decent storyline and acting, this is quite an enjoyable movie. Critic's of Diesel saying that he was a poor man's James Bond, should realize that neither Diesel or the filmmaker's set out to replace James Bond, merely give audiences a new, uncoventional kind of spy movie. "xXx" had the makings of a highly successful franchise with the phenomenal box office success that this film enjoyed, sadly the sequel "xXx: State of the Union" was not nearly as good.
Even though the sequel was lackluster, "xXx" is quite enjoyable. If you are a fan of action movies that actually have a story to accompany the explosive action sequences, then "xXx" is the movie for you. Go check it out, you won't be disappointed.
"xXx: Unrated Director's Cut" contains violence, nudity, and language.
Movie Review: Diesel Is Decent Summary: 4 Stars
Vin Diesel is a pretty good guy to play these new action-heroes. He's a big, muscular macho guy who men can look upon with some respect and the ladies can fall for. Unfortunately, a number of these testosterone-filled action films, including this one, are somewhat moronic in nature. However, they are undeniably entertaining.
You can always depend on one thing in these type of movies, from the "biker movies" of the '50s to today's films: the hero will always be a rebel against authority and any laws of the land. Also, an even more-recent theme is to have the government actually employ the rebel to get the job done because their men are unable to accomplish what this ultra-tattooed macho man can do! It's so much garbage, but it has its moments and Diesel still is a likable hero of sorts.
Like Arnold Schwarzenegger before him, and Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris and then "The Rock" and now Jason Stratham, these kind of muscle-men have fairly clean mouths and at least some ideals.
For pure action, the movie succeeds because, in the end, it does entertain which is the name of the game.
Movie Review: Exciting and well written action flick Summary: 4 Stars
I saw XXX: State of the Union before watching this, so I wasn't surprised by Xander's death. What did surprise me was how lame "The Death of Xander" sequence was. It made no sense. The way they worked around not having Vin Diesel play the role in the short was creative though.
This really could have been a modern James Bond movie. The opening sequences were exciting and Xander's character traits and growth were developed well. Although incredible, the action sequences in XXX are more credible than some in State of the Union. Sorry they killed XXX off. It would have been interesting to bring him back for a cameo in XXX-3.
I'm not sure how the Uncensored Unrated Director's Cut differed from the theatrical release, but I'd definitely recommend it to all action and secret agent movie fans.
Movie Review: Another Example of Why Director Cuts Are Better Summary: 4 Stars
But again enough with the multiple rereleases. This one, like The Fifth Element, is worth buying. The picture and sound are much clearer and cleaner. The extras are fast and furious!!! There is even a short (and cleverly edited) film that bridges both films together, music videos, and a pass to see xXx: State of the Union for FREE!!!! WoW!!! If you have the other DVDs of this one, sell 'em off and get this one...it's a keeper! Also there is 8 more minutes of footage, seemlessly added to the film. A great two disc set.
Movie Review: James Bond fuses with the X-Games and the Dirty Dozen... Summary: 3 Stars
Ultimate freedom would be anarchy where rules do not apply and chaos governs everything. In such society, people could do whatever they desire. Xander "X" Cage (Vin Diesel) is a freedom seeker that exercises his anarchistic politics in a personal manner, which he displays on underground websites through short films. These film clips often contain some form of extreme action sport, or high-risk activity that appeals to most, as it is dangerous and cool. However, his risk taking displays some level of selfishness, which reflects through his life of having it all, as the established part of society despises his neglectful attitude.
Xander's attitude is what makes him perfect for one of the National Security Agency's (NSA) missions, as the NSA has previously lost a number of agents due to their personalities. Agent Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) decides to recruit him and group like-minded characters. It is the edgy, aggressiveness, and distant behavior of Xander that Agent Gibbons wants for the mission, but also someone calculated, perceptive, and quick while being able to be cool. After a number of live tests, Xander passes at the top of his class and he arrives in Czechoslovakia where he is supposed to gather information on an organization called Anarchy 99.
Jet-lagged and irritated Xander arrives to Prague where he meets with a city official with an inferiority complex who lays down the rules for him. Instead of playing it by the rules Xander does what he does best, his own thing. He simple walks up to Yorgi (Marton Csokas) and introduces himself as a potential buyer of luxury sports cars while blowing the cover for the insignificant police officer. Xander's attitude fits in perfect with the people in Anarchy 99, as he quickly climbs the popularity ladder in Prague.
The friendships Xander makes with the people in Anarchy 99 is real, as he likes to hang out with them and do crazy stuff. However, as he gets closer to understanding them he realizes the flaw within his own logical reasoning in regards to freedom and anarchy, as total freedom could harm innocent people. This idea motivates Xander to pursue Anarchy 99, which brings the audience through a rollercoaster-like adventure where the gunshots and explosions are not far in between.
XXX delivers a highly explosive action adventure where James Bond fuses with the X-Games and the Dirty Dozen (1967). The story could explore themes such as second chances, or the self-discovery in regards to anarchy. However, it does not develop an interesting theme or plot, which leaves the audience with a hollow and superficial story that relies on explosions, gunshots, and extreme sports. After awhile it becomes tedious to watch Vin Diesel out-jump and out-shoot the crooks, which really hurts the potential of the story. Nonetheless, Diesel's performance displays some quality moments where he brings out the cool edginess and quick-witted aggressiveness in Xander. In the big picture, XXX offers an acceptable cinematic experience, which has youthful coolness and refreshing moments.
