Movie Reviews of Worlds Greatest Goals
Movie Review: Almost Unwatchable
Summary: 2 Stars
To begin with, this DVD is titled deceptively. It should have been titled something like "World Cup Moments, 1966 - 1986." There are thirty or so great goals on this DVD, but they are far outnumbered by unspectacular goals and other footage. Whatever enjoyment the viewer might experience watching those great goals is offset by annoyances like (1) the liberal use of ground-level and close-up shots ruining many goals; (2) switching from a conventional angle to a ground-level angle at the most crucial moments (again, ruining many goals, and frustrating the viewer); (3) the poor, hazy quality of most of the footage; and (4) the atrocious music. Mercifully, the DVD is less than an hour long. The only good thing I can say about this DVD is that it covers six World Cup tournaments. If seeing great goals is your objective, you'll do far better with many other DVDs. Here are a few suggestions:
"FIFA World Cup 2006 - All the Goals" is two hours long; has pristine picture; goals are presented from the most advantageous angles; and the commentary is enthusiastic and well-informed.
"A Decade of Great Goals" covers the first ten years of the English Premiership, and includes dozens of great goals. The second disc contains highlights of the eighteen most exciting matches of this ten-year period, and is the most enjoyable soccer DVD I've watched.
"Champions of Europe" presents the first fifty (1956 - 2005) European club championship finals. It contains many great goals scored by storied football clubs like Real Madrid, AC Milan, Ajax, and Liverpool.
Lastly, "The Untouchables" chronicles Arsenal's unbeaten season (2003 - 2004), and contains two hours of fantastic soccer footage. It includes thirty great goals by Thierry Henry alone!
