Movie Reviews of Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)

Movie Review: SO MUCH TO SEE AND HEAR!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

There are some key reviews on here by a ton of people who were either at Woodstock, were in the movie, saw the movie in theaters, or had a hand in working on the production of the film. I missed out on it all, being as that I wasn't even born until some thirteen years after the movie was released theatrically. This is an outstanding film in many ways. Personally, I totally dig the scene being presented, and it's hard not to be just a little envious of the people who experienced this thing first hand (for the record... I got hosed during both the '94 and '99 editions, actually got myself tickets both times - I was only 11 in '94, and couldn't get myself to NY...damn. Just not meant to be I guess.) The difference between this though, can be felt right down to the effort that was put into making the film. You can tell because the filming style is highly unique in a lot of ways, and you can tell that the crew was loving being a part of the experience. Even for the credited Martin Scorsese, who has filmed many a concert film, and a few other movies you may have heard of, in my opinion, did his very best camera work for Woodstock:The Movie. Theres so much to take in when you watch the 3 plus hours that have been presented here.
I have owned this thing for years on video, but finally got the chance to watch it on a great big TV with the proper surround sound, and I was in rock and roll hippie heaven, man. Theres a hefty amount of added footage, but still I wish there was more. From what I've read theres at least a dozen hours of usable concert footage that has never been released, and at one time there was actually a plan to make a volume two movie, but copyrights and stuff bla bla bla....
ANYWAY... This movie rocks my ace off. I can never get too much of those hippie girls doing their drug dances, or just the whole vibe in general. Plus, theres lots of history involved too. Nice.

Movie Review: A Lotta Freaks!
Summary: 3 Stars

I really enjoyed the directors cut release when it was showing in the theatre and the original version changed my life! The dvd however, is a disappointment to be sure. And it is next to impossible to find the original on dvd with the better mix, although it can be found on VHS. Also, the flow of the original is much better. that being said, the extra 40 minutes of material is still very cool and welcomed.

Yet, even with the additional footage, it still leaves me wanting more. The sound quality, for instance, to my ears is very sub-par. It appears that reverb was added in an effort to enhance the sound. Instead, it just makes the music sound as if it were recorded in a ice hockey rink. This documentary should have received the same treatment as the "Monterey Pop" dvd as far as the superior sound and bonus features. And there is still plenty of great footage (that has yet to make it to dvd) that could have been added as a bonus. What we do get are laughable sub-titles and an ad for other movies that we might enjoy. Another minor quibble, at the end of this edition, they have a tribute to those who have passed. Very nice, except someone misspelled Canned Heat's Alan C.(Christie)Wilson's name as "Alan G. Wilson." (What can I say? I'm a huge fan of the Blind Owl!)

The music, minus the sound quality and some bad editing, gets a 5 star rating. Not always technically on, but very spiritually on.

This material should have been treated with more respect. It's a significant historical document for cryin' out loud! Maybe they'll try and fix it up again in 2009 for the 40th anniversary and it will be soooo good that we'll all have to buy it again, one more time!

Movie Review: WOODSTOCK!!
Summary: 5 Stars

EXCELLENT DELIVERY, RIGHT ON TIME AND IN PERFECT SHAPE!! IT IS NOW ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES. I GIVE A VERY ENTHUSIATIC TWO THUMBS UP!

Movie Review: A great collection of music greats!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this DVD so that I would have a bit of history in my music collection. The performances on this DVD are all collectors items from Richie Havens to The Who.

Anyone who lived through the 60's and 70's will remember the political protests against the war in Vietnam and the drug culture which are evident in this DVD also.

Movie Review: Bought it for Santana
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this DVD for Santana's Soul Sacrifice. In my opinion, this is the highlight of the whole concert. Michael Shrieve's drum solo is unbelievable. Imagine 400,000 people dancing in a muddy field, all at once! Crazy! Santana stopped the show! Ten Years After and The Who rocked the show too, and of course, Jimi Hendrix ripping on guitar. I gave it 4 stars because there's too much talking. Some talking parts are long and drag on and on. They could've been replaced with more music. Otherwise, a really good movie.
