Movie Reviews of Wives and Daughters

Movie Review: Characterizations wonderful, plot, dialogue, tension, romance excellent!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an absolute classic for anyone who enjoys quality literature made into a movie: a fascinating plot, and actors so "spot on" that it is easy to forget you are watching a movie and not real life. Costuming and setting are fantastic. You are so drawn into the plot, one can't wait to see what will happen next and what bit of intriguing character will be introduced next.

Superb plot interweaving a variety of families in the classic English village. The main characters are incredibly well done, even those you aren't supposed to like, you like because of the quality of the acting. Drama, humor, romance and a happy ending. G rated.

Don't wait! Can be found in many libraries (This rivals A & E's version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice----one of the best ever made.)

Also consider another Elizabeth Gaskell novel-made-into-movie: North & South (http://www.amazon.com/North-South-Daniela-Denby-Ashe/dp/B000AYEL6U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1273516209&sr=8-2)

Movie Review: Brilliant performances
Summary: 5 Stars

Justine Waddell, Michael Gambon and others really knock it out of the park in this stylish and totally engaging production. The uncertain, ambivalent, sometimes malicious actions and motivations of Elizabeth Gaskell's characters make this several degrees rawer and more realistic than any Austen adaptation. I think that's good for a change. Especially interesting are the very real agonies over the deaths of loved ones, or the minor physical altercations between Mr. Gibson and his new wife, even his own daughter. The acting is so good that I took many of the characters at face value, i.e. I took Molly for herself, not the actress. And what a fantastic literary heroine Molly Gibson is. I'll have to read the book now, although I have no doubt Andrew Davies did a good deal of justice to it with clever alterations of his own. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Another great BBC production
Summary: 5 Stars

I've watched Pride and Prejudice so many times that I've almost worn through the DVD so I was looking for something new. Wives and Daughters was on my recommended list so I decided to give it a try. It was wonderful! The story is very like those of Jane Austen. It has humor, heartbreak and, of course, romance. I fell in love with the characters.
The plot follows a young lady being raised by her father who is a country doctor. She is sent to live with a family that her father knows well so that she may have a woman's influence in her life. She becomes very attached to the family. While she is away, her father meets a widow and decides to marry again. This sets up all sorts of problems. This was originally a miniseries so it's seperated into several episodes. If you are an Austen fan, I believe you will love this as much as I did.

Movie Review: Jane Austinesque
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are a Jane Austin fan, like me, you will find it hard to be satisfied with period pieces by other authors. While Jane Austin has a sense of humor that other writers seem unable to duplicate, she also has a great moral compass to which her exceptional heroines and their heroes adhere. It is this morality, along with her exceptional character development, that makes her love stories so enveloping. Although it is not a Jane Austin piece, Wives and Daughters is one of the few additional period pieces that will please all those Jane Austin fans out there. It is a well done film, with a wonderful love story of a great heroine. Unlike other period pieces these days that leave me very disappointed, Wives and Daughters presents conflicts without compromising morality, while leaving the viewer happy in the end.

Movie Review: a great miniseries in the fashion of pride and prejudice
Summary: 5 Stars

ever since i saw pride and prejudice i have been on the hunt for others of the same type. this miniseries delivered to a "t". i enjoyed the family interactions, the intrigues and manipulations and especially i liked that this miniseries had a happy ending. i was always wondering, as i watched, how the heroine was going to end up at the end as she kept everyones' secrets. usually that person gets stiffed somehow in the end, but i was pleasantly surprised that that wasn't the case.

i highly recommend this to anyone who likes a "nice" story that gives you a smile at the end or enjoys period pieces that give you a glimpse of 19th century life and the social climbing that colored everyone.
