Movie Review: Oldie but goodie
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a fictionalized account of what it's like to be in an America's Cup race. It's probably the best in the sailing genre. The photography by John Toll is exquisite. Despite its age, it looks fine on a 1080p screen. Remember, it's a DVD, not Blue-Ray. I can see the peach-fuzz on Jennifer Grey's shoulders and the thread in the sewing machine - that's the most I can expect from playing a DVD on HDTV. The direction by Francis Ford Coppola is excellent and well-paced. The music is perfect and sounds terrific on 5.1, even though it wasn't recorded that way (that's more about your amp and player than it is about the DVD itself) - both the video and audio were digitally re-mastered. This isn't a coming of age movie; it's about coming into your own. The theme in the lives of the characters, as in the race, is how to keep others from stealing the wind from your sails - of finding your own course in life, your own voice, and pursuing your own dream. And yet it's not about retreating from life, and becoming a lone wolf so you don't have to deal with others. In the end, the story suggests you can't achieve greatness on your own. Your dream has to be big enough to include others - to let them achieve their dreams along the way to achieving yours. That's the only way everyone can enjoy the journey together, overcome the challenges together, and share the trophy together. It's a good story, well rendered by all, and well worth owning!
