Movie Reviews of Winchester '73Movie Review: A good, exciting story line Summary: 4 Stars
In this story about a "tour the famous rifle takes", James Stewart and Mallard Mitchell are good as two tough drifters, one of them (Stewart) winning a rifle in Dodge City. Will Geer is a convincing Wyatt Earp, the easy-going but no-nonsense marshall of that rough town. Stephen McNally and Dan Duryea are truly mean "animals". Rock Hudson, as a young man here is a bold Indian chief. Tony Curtis (billed in this movie as Anthony Curtis) does portray a determined soldier. Shelley Winters and Charlie Drake also give strong support to the story.
The story is well-structured. Again, Stewart wins the rifle in a shooting match in Dodge City, but then looses it to an outlaw after a fight in a hotel with him; the outlaw is his brother (McNally). It goes into three other hands before, ironoically, it goes back to Stewart before he and his brother have a shootout with each other.
I did like this movie, which was up there with "The Far Country", "Bend of the River", and "Night Passage" as far as quality of Stewart westerns is concerned. There was good acting, action, and, in general, exciting drama.
Movie Review: One Of The Better Westerns Of That Era Summary: 4 Stars
I was very impressed with this film. I would have to rate it as one of the better classic-era westerns. I say that for the whole thing: the acting, mature dialog, no- nonsense story and excellent cinematography.
Director Anthony Mann, who did several well-photographed film noirs around this same era, also made some westerns such as this one. It has that same film-noir look. Mann and Jimmy Stewart collaborated on several westerns during this period. . If you like this movie, I recommend the Mann-Stewart film "Bend Of The River."
In a nutshell, the story is about a man, "Lin McAdam," (Stewart) who owns this prestigious Winchester 73 rifle, a weapon he won fair-and-square in a contest. It is then stolen and passed on from villain to villain. All of those villains are interesting characters.
Aiding Stewart act out this interesting tale are Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea, Stephen McNally, Millard Mitchell, Charles Drake, Will Greer and J. C. Flippen. All of them are fun to watch.
Movie Review: Winchester 73 Summary: 4 Stars
Being able to find a unique gift like the movie Winchester 73 is very important to me. I happen to give my brother a birthday gift every year that has his birthday+1 in it. I have been doing this for many years. Hence when I searched the number 73 (as he really only is 72) I was delighted to come up with Winchester 73 because not only did it provide the unique gift but he is also a western movie buff. The gift was perfect
Movie Review: Winchester 73- A Different Jimmy Stewart Summary: 4 Stars
Winchester '73 is a great Western that showcases Jimmy Stewart in a new light. Jimmy is not the "aw shucks" leading man of the 1940s. In this film, Jimmy plays a man obsessed with revenge. This black and white movie is the 1st of 8 movies that Stewart makes with director, Anthony Mann. The film packs a lot of action and drama into a 90 minute movie. I highly recommend Winchester'73.
Movie Review: Great Western, Incredibly Poor DVD Transfer Summary: 2 Stars
It's a real shame how badly this film was transferred to DVD. Much of the DVD is fine; some sections of it look better than I've ever seen in any other format, displaying the excellence of the black-and-white photography. But other sections are grainy and marred by distracting visual noise, and that isn't the worst of it: In several places during the film, the DVD "jumps" from one scene to another because obviously the source material was so poor! It's like watching a worn-out, popping film in a run-down theater! This is something I can't ever recall on a DVD transfer of a film as exciting and important as "Winchester '73."The interview with Jimmy Stewart as he watches the film with the interviewer is interesting, but the "Winchester" DVD overall ranks as a *MAJOR* disappointment.
