Movie Reviews of Winchester '73Movie Review: THE LIFE STORY OF A CLASSIC RIFLE Summary: 5 Stars
The rifle is a coveted prize at a western shooting contest hosted by the western legend, Wyatt Earp (Will Geer). It is a perfect Winchester that won't be sold, only won. Two brothers compete for the prize; both trained by the same man, one good, and one evil. Right prevails is the shootout. But Evil will not accept the results and steals the rifle. What follows then is a series of changes of hand for the "One of a Thousand" Winchester. From wily gun traders to Indian raiders to quick-draw outlaws, the gun's odyssey is followed in this classic western with the good brother (James Stewart) seeking not only to regain his treasure but to put an end to a lifelong obsession. Shelly Winters comes along for the wild ride and look for Tony Curtis and Rock Hudson in very unpredictable cameo appearances.

This is a darn good western with a very good cast: James Stewart-Millard Mitchell-Dan Duryea-Stephen McNally-Shelley Winters-JC Flippen-John McIntire-Charles Drake and two early bit players at Universal: Tony Curtis and Rock Hudson...throw in Director Anthony Mann and you have one big hit on your hands...you get much more for your money spent....this film is described pretty well by my colleagues in here...the beauty of this dirty/dusty western is complemented by the solid character actors that make Stewart-McNally and Duryea standout all the more....good cast--good screenplay---good direction and plenty of firepower is heard from start to finish...a good olde fashion shoot 'em up...saddle tramps and all...bulls-eye dead center!!.....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF
Movie Review: Winchester '73 Summary: 5 Stars
James Stewart wanted a change from his folksy, everyman roles, and in a risky move, chose a western to give his image a harder edge. Director Anthony Mann and he would collaborate on four more oaters after this outing, which proved a huge success. "Winchester" brought a new complexity of character to the Western form, literally resuscitating a fading genre. This role also revived Stewart's career by displaying the actor's impressive range: Stewart's McAdam is a dark, conflicted, angry fellow, far removed from the Mr. Smiths and Elwood P. Dowds of the world. Film also features sterling support from Dan Duryea, Millard Mitchell, and a comely Shelley Winters as a sweet-natured showgirl. Also look fast for Rock Hudson playing an Indian brave.
Movie Review: A Classic Summary: 5 Stars
The first of a string of westerns that Mann and Stewart would work on, it is credited with reviving the genre in the 1950's -- a decade that would see a number of classic western movies. It shows the other side of Jimmy Stewart's screen persona: a bitter, driven man bent on revenge. Not the ah-shucks image people have of him. If you don't have this one, get it. In a decade that produced RED RIVER, HIGH NOON, THE SEARCHERS, MAN OF THE WEST and the Randolph Scott/Bud Boetticher films, this is the one that laid the groundwork for all the rest.
Movie Review: Review of "Winchester 73" Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was fun to watch. An old fashioned western with plenty of colorful characters and shoot'em up scenes. Jimmy Stewart does a great job playing the focused and determined manhunter. If you love character actors such as Will Geer, Jay C. Flippen, and Millard Mitchell, you got to get this. Will Geer does a wonderful job playing the aging but still very well respected Wyatt Earp. Dan Duryea's "Waco Johnny Dean" was worth the price of admission alone. Highly recommended! Pass the popcorn!
