Movie Reviews of Winchester '73

Movie Review: Great Western Tale about a Gun
Summary: 5 Stars

Winchester '73 is a must see Western especially if you like Jimmy Stewart. It includes some great scenary, excellent action scenes, and a plot full of twists and surprises. The idea of focusing the story on a gun as it changes hands is simple, but in reality, it weaves a pretty complex and interesting story. The supporting cast is also strong

Jimmy Stewart plays a driven man who ends up hunting down his brother after he steals the prized Winchester '73. It is worth mentioning that this rifle is as important as depicted in the movie. Everyone wanted to have one. The gun fight scenes are very well done, and the director does an excellent job of moving the plot along without a whole lot of dialogue.

The DVD includes an interview with Jimmy Stewart as he watches the film. This interview gives you real insight into the man, and the movie. If you like westerns you should definitely watch this movie. It ranks up there with the John Wayne and Clint Eastwood classics.

Movie Review: Worth the Purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

I had long wanted to see "Winchester 73" for quite a while, due to the storyline and Jimmy Stewart headlining. I rarely buy a DVD before viewing it first, and when I do decide to purchase , it usually requires even more debate. I took a chance and bought it because I love westerns and I love Jimmy. Not only was I satisfied with the main plot, which was only a back-drop for the film's multiple sub-plots, but every scene was interesting which is difficult to pull off in any film. The movie was well paced and had good action sequences. I won't delve into any one scene because I don't want to give anything away, but I will say this: check out a young Rock Hudson in a small but memorable role as a...well you'll just have to see it for yourself. The best extra in this item is easy: the commentary by the one an only MR. STEWART. This DVD was well worth the purchase.

Movie Review: A unique western
Summary: 5 Stars

"Winchester '73" is a western which is so good that even people who don't normally care for westerns would enjoy it. The story is unusual (the passage of a coveted firearm from one person to another as the story progresses), the cast star-studded (a young Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis are among those with small roles), and the plot fast-moving (it was one of several collaborations between actor James Stewart and director Anthony Mann that turned out a series of superior films). The commentary with Stewart also covers other facets and films of his career and, for film historians, is probably worth the price of the DVD all by itself. Will Geer's particular take on the character of Wyatt Earp is not to be missed, nor is Dan Duryea's pscho gunfighter, Waco Johnny Dean. This is simply a great picture from the '50s, when they knew how to tell an exciting story.

Movie Review: The Most Wanted Gun
Summary: 5 Stars

All for the love of a one of its kind,Winchester rifle, patented 1873,the kind of gun every kid dreams of,and will set the tone for this one of a kind western, starring Jimmy Stewart,Shelly Winters and Dan Duryea, directed by the legendary Anthony Mann. The film starts off with a bang, like the races,as the town's best known marksmen shoot it out to the end for the possession of this highly prized firearm which is passed down from hand to hand until the rightful owner takes the trophy home. There's no slacking in the acting department in this one,Shelly Winters gives an outstanding performance,as so does Dan Duryea as his usual ruthless character, and James Stewart is right on the top of his game, all featured in this motion picture worthy of viewing time and time again,a credit to the western genre,Winchester '73 is featured in black and white.

Movie Review: The boy next door turns into a dangerous gunfighter. Jimmy at his best!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Jimmy Stewart was always type-cast as the aw-shucks boy-next-door type until the magnificent Mr. Mann came along. Mr. Mann evoked the spirit hiding inside Stewart. And that spirit was a raw, hard edged, dangerous man who's been there, seen it all and lived to tell about it. Stewart doesn't have the intimidating, huge imposing staure of John Wayne, nor does he possess an exceptionally powerful voice. But Stewart's eyes did all of his intimidating and left the viewer thinking: This guy is dangerous. His western characters always had an extra element to them that's always felt but never forced. And that was his hidden "psychotic" tendency. There was just always something never mentioned but always present with Stewart's western characters. It almost seemed possible he could snap at any moment. This film is 1 of the ten best of all westerns.
