Movie Reviews of Will PennyMovie Review: Will Penny Summary: 5 Stars
Tom Gries's fabulous Western transcends various shoot-outs and intrigues to serve as both a touching love story and tale of self-discovery. Sensitive, perceptive script (by Gries) is brought to life by winning lead performances from Heston and Hackett, not to mention an inspired turn by Donald Pleasance as a Bible-thumping psychopath (with two equally demented sons, one played by Bruce Dern). Ben Johnson adds authentic flavoring as Will's no-nonsense boss. "Penny" rates as mandatory viewing for Western fans.
Movie Review: Good Show Summary: 5 Stars
A western for all seasons, this film gets the feel of landscape's rhythm as summer falls into winter. Despite its improbable plot, it also gets much that is right and true. Actors & director were careful with this movie. They took care to get details right; nuances and inflections seem perfectly pitched.
Heston is magnificent. So is the literally incredible performance of Donald Pleasence. Modern movies, contrasted to Will Penny, are a vast wasteland. They don't build actors like these any more.
Movie Review: Charlton Heston's best movie... Summary: 5 Stars
If you like Westerns at all, this one is a classic. Heston is an over the hill cowboy, facing the inevitable demise of cattle driving.
In the 60's, westerns were the most popular TV show (Gunsmoke, High Chapparal, The Rebel, Bonanza, The Rifleman, etc.) and I watched a lot of them.
This movie will not let you down.
Movie Review: Chuck and the Six-Million Dollar Man Save the Day Summary: 5 Stars
Charlton Heston plays a subtle hero in this wonderful western. Lee Majors makes his debut as Mr. Heston's sidekick and does an awesome job. Donald Pleasance was also great as the wacko-in-charge who along with his crew, took Heston on. This was one of Mr. Heston's favorite movies which makes it all the more special.
Movie Review: Will Penny DVD Summary: 5 Stars
An excellent and atmospheric Western with fine acting (and one of Charlton Heston's best performances) and authentic script. In my opinion, David Raksin's old-fashioned score does not do justice to this outstanding film. The 1.85:1 picture is enhanced and excellent.
