Movie Reviews of Will & Grace - Season ThreeMovie Review: The Jack and Karen Show Summary: 5 StarsWill and Grace is always lovingly referred to as The Jack and Karen show, and rightfully so. They always steal the scene. This season is especially funny. It has the unforgettable episode of Will and Grace recounting their dating history complete with Grace's 80's hair and Will's "I'm Gay" confession. Love this season!
Movie Review: Season Three: first in downward spiral; mediocre DVDs Summary: 2 StarsPeople have already noted the confusing, cumbersome menus and absence of Spanish subtitles in the Season Three Will & Grace DVD set. Evidently, NBC simply doesn't care much about the DVD release of W&G. Still, the Season Three episodes are all in their original form, not the cut syndicated versions. In fact, "Cheaters" is the 31-minute "Supersize" edit that originally aired, rather than the *longer* two-parter padded with new material added for syndication. Curiously, it's usually the 1-hour shows that are split in two for syndication, with several minutes *removed*--e.g. Season Two finale "Ben? Her?," the only cut syndicated episode in that DVD set. With "Cheaters," having the *shorter* original version and the unusual longer two-part version might have been nice for comparison in this for-cash DVD set, but I'm not too bothered. With NBC's usual carelessness, the Supersize "Cheaters" is mislabeled "Cheaters, Part 1" even though there is no "Part 2" in this original form. It's certainly better than the brutal cutting of all the other "Supersize" episodes by 35% to shoehorn them into one-part 20-minute syndication airings--and frustratingly, generally used in the DVD sets. The only W&G DVD set following this one with all its episodes presented in uncut original form is Season 4; Seasons 5-6 (and presumably 7-8 when they appear) use the cut syndicated edits shown for free on TV daily.
Season Three, to my thinking, is the first one in which the writers stopped knowing what to do with the characters, changing them from humorous but real people into generally unpleasant caricatures. Jack and Karen become insufferably, inhumanly, and uncomfortably cruel rather than especially funny, traits which would be even further exaggerated as the series continued; Will usually is presented as a stereotyped prissy, gay eunuch; and there are many anti-Semitic overtones in the writing for Grace. Only the performances of the quartet save these episodes. However, I really turned off to W&G during the third season when Jack, after two seasons of out-and-proud gay consciousness combined with a certain wisdom and courage (especially in Season 1 where he's never an embarrassing buffoon), suddenly becomes actually *homophobic*, inexplicably abusing his sister lesbians throughout Ep. 4 "Girl Trouble." I kept having the horrible feeling that the anti-gay right-wing political sweep of that year (Season Three dates from 2000-1) had something to do with the writing, which floundered in cowardly, foolish, and directionless ways, throughout the remainder of the series; the few exceptions became nice surprises, contrary to the good quality viewers had come to expect during the first two seasons.
Movie Review: so funny! Summary: 4 StarsThe third season of WILL & GRACE brought a very welcome and amusing smorgesbord of guest stars like Woody Harrelson, as Grace's sloppy and [more than slightly] overgrown man-child of a boyfriend, Gregory Hines as Ben Deucette, Will's crafty and very smooth ladies man boss, Ellen Degeneres as a enterprising nun and Sandra Bernhard as her fabulous self, just to name a few examples. Our regular characters, Will (Eric McCormack), Grace (Debra Messing), Karen (Megan Mullally) and Jack (Sean Hayes) are up to their usual brand of shenanigans. Yes, the neuroses are still alive and well. Karen is still incessantly insulting Grace on her outfits and hair, Jack continues to evolve into a self-made performance artist with a small handful of audience regulars (literally). Grace juggles boyfriends like jugglers keep balls in the air. Last but not least, Will is still towing the line between being confidante for Grace, piggy bank for Jack, and working in a social life away from his randy brood of friends, in pursuit of his own romantic inclinations. I would reccomend this as yet another great season of W&G, that went long on the gimmicks--yet, somehow they managed to work very well.
