Movie Reviews of Who's That Girl?Movie Review: Madonna causes a commotion in this classic 80's comedy! Summary: 4 Stars
Madonna is the reigning goddess of pop, but she's had considerable trouble in finding movies which emulate the same box-office success. While it's now regarded as a classic 80's movie, WHO'S THAT GIRL (1987) was in fact not such a big hit when originally released; and most critics raked Madonna across the coals for her performance. Growing up in the decade that style forgot - aka the Eighties - I have a soft spot for the films of the era, so WHO'S THAT GIRL is a valuable addition to the collection...and Madonna isn't half bad, y'know!
Streetwise Nikki Finn (Madonna) has just been released following four years of jailtime after she took the fall for her boyfriend's murder. Now she must find the evidence which will clear her name and bring the true killer to justice. Nikki's unlikely cohort turns out to be Louden Trott (Griffin Dunne), a stuffy young businessman assigned to transport her from jail to the nearest bus-stop. Chased by crooks and undercover cops, Nikki and Louden bounce from one hilarious misadventure to the next...but could love ever be on the cards?
Madonna is a delightful presence and plays her role like a combination of Betty Boop and Judy Holliday. Griffin Dunne is the perfect straight-man to Madonna's comic shenanigans. The strong support cast also boasts John McMartin, Haviland Morris ("Sixteen Candles"), Sir John Mills and Bibi Besch. Madonna provided several chart toppers for the soundtrack ("Who's That Girl", "Causing a Commotion", "The Look of Love" and "Can't Stop").
Sadly the only DVD extra is the original trailer. A must-own for 80's movies fans!
Movie Review: An overlooked gem... Summary: 4 Stars
I love Madonna, but even I know she's not the greatest actress. Fact is, in some movies she's completely blank-faced, as if she's waiting for the director to tell her what she should be feeling right then. That's what makes Who's That Girl, in a way, refreshing. The film itself is a bit of a mess, and the climax gets way too silly for it's own good. But for most of the film you get Madonna at her acting best, and I mean it. She's funny, with good comic timing, and she's completely believable. She and Griffin Dunne make a great team and make the film zip right along. Those who think of Madonna as the worst actress around need to give this film another look because they're missing out. Why Madonna doesn't do more films like this is beyond me. She's at her best when she's having fun and not trying so hard to be taken seriously. I'll take a Who's That Girl performance over an Evita performance any day (though she was good in that too).
Movie Review: I loved this movie Summary: 4 Stars
Madonna may not be the best actor in Hollywood but she certainly can play a GREAT ditzy blonde. When I was younger, this movie made me laugh, but I never payed that much attention to the story line. Now, as an adult, I have learned to appreciate everything about this movie and it STILL makes me laugh. One moment, in the movie, that will ALWAYS stand out in my mind, is when Madonna's character tells everyone in the hospital that Louden's last name is CLEAR. That is great comedy! Overall, I think this movie was underrated and the only reason why it flopped is because the majority of the populous just didn't give it a chance! I think this movie should be seen by everyone, at least once in their lifetime!
Movie Review: I Love Who's That Girl. Summary: 4 Stars
I am so glad Who's that girl is finally on Dvd.I have waited many years for it to come out and it was worth the wait. I recommend this movie to Madonna fans and also If you're a new madonna fan, watch this first or second. Madonna has some funny lines and scenes and it's one of my personal favorites along with Desperately Seeking Susan and A league of their own.
Movie Review: Guilty Pleasure Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this DVD as a Christmas present to myself. It's a movie that I watched repeatedly as a young girl when I was obsessed with Madonna. I've grown up but (I had her in my cab once) I still love this movie. It's what it is and nothing more and that's what I like about it.
