Movie Reviews of Whitesnake - Live in the Still of the Night (Deluxe) [DVD/CD Combo]
Movie Review: A nice surprise.
Summary: 5 Stars
I stumbled across the opening song on this DVD, "Burn" while searching You Tube. I was very happy with what I heard. It was David Coverdale in a 2004 concert sounding like the Coverdale of the 80's. I ended up watching the clip on You Tube over and over and decided if the rest of the concert was as good as the first song I'd be in for a treat. The DVD is very good. On the audio side of things, its done very well. The production is excellent. The vocals and all instruments are mixed very well and you get almost studio sound quality with the big air sound of a concert. The band itself is a nice blend of musicians that are more interested in getting the music down nice and tight, rather than the over the top hair makeup stuff that killed off bands like this in the 90's.
The songs are taken from the early blues period of Whitesnake, some even earlier Deep Purple stuff and of course the super hits the band had in the 80's. David Coverdale sounds great!!
If there are any negatives, I'd say the actual style the concert was filmed in could have been better. The cameras are very busy. There are a lot of quick edits and a frequent switch between color and a grainy black and white. The film itself has a hint of Hollywood in it giving it a movie feel rather than the look of a live show. Its hard to explain and I'm being very picky on that.
The bottom line is, the show is very good, the quality of the music is top shelf. I like to see the old bands return and do well.
