Movie Reviews of Where the Red Fern Grows

Movie Review: Red Fern review- Mr. Miller's class-per. 1- Metzli V. Mejia
Summary: 3 Stars

Where the Red Fern Grows the book and the movie are great. They have many differences and similarities. Though the movie was not as detailed as the book it had the main story line.

In the beginning of the story they talk a lot about puppy love disease. In the movie they don't talk a lot about that. Billy saved his money in a sock in the movie but in the book he saved it in a can. When Billy gave the money to get the dogs to his grandpa he gave the money in dollars. In the book it was all in coins. Billy was walking in the forest on his way back to his house when he saw a tree and it said "Dan and Ann." So that is what he named them. In the book he thought about different names then he sees the tree. When Billy is training his dogs they never show how he got the coon tail. In the book they show how he trapped the coon. The movie has something different- in the movie the grandpa invites the family to dinner. That is not in the book. The sisters never asked to have the cups from the contest. They never show the best looking dog contest either. The movie cuts off the part where Old Dan and Little Ann are covered in snow. Also, when grandpa's leg was hurt in the movie, they never showed when his leg was wrapped in coon skin.

Although the book is a lot more detailed than the movie, the movie was great too. In my opinion the book was a lot better because it had more details. I think you should read the book first and then see the movie Where the Red Fern Grows.

WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS:
MOVIE REVIEW

Where the Red Fern Grows: a heartwarming book about a boy and his two prized hunting dogs. While the book was a winner, could the movie have fallen short?

Well... yes. While the movie boasts a great soundtrack, a few well-executed scenes, and a handful of winning quotes, the book easily surpassed it.

The movie's main shortcoming was that it deviated from the book's classic storyline. In the book, Billy Coleman, a hillbilly from the Ozarks, raises and bonds with his two prized hunting dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, two redbone hounds with completely different characters. In the movie, the dogs have no apparent differences, and the boy-dog bond is vastly underplayed.

Also in the movie, the dogs mature too quickly, and most hunting scenes happen in the daylight hours, as opposed to the middle of the night, when coon hunting is really done. Some other flaws include a really fake fight scene, what should have been a dramatic and suspenseful death cut down to nothing, and a tournament, which, in the book, was held in winter, taking place in the middle of summer.

Overall, I found this movie rather disappointing. While the writer of the book managed to make a rather typical story (boy wants dogs, boy gets dogs, dogs die) touching and even interesting, the theatrical adaptation does no such thing.

Movie Review: Where the red fern grows review
Summary: 3 Stars

In this movie they started the beggining differently then the written story. Also they introduced the Prichard boys early in the movie than they did in the book. I thought that they did a good job filming the dogs in the movie. In the book they said that he found the names in the tree bark with a heart around the names. And in the movie he just thought of the names. I thought that they showed a good job of showing the dogs growing up. I thought the pups were very cute. In the book Billy had 3 sisters and in the movie he only had 2 sisters. In the movie he is not calling them old dan and little ann. Personly, i thought there were parts in the movie that were very cheesey. They didnt really go into much detail of how the prichard boy died. It is a very depressing movie and book. Instead of snow there was rain. On the ghost coon the prichard boys bet $5 instead of $2. I thought there wasnt much detail in how old dan died. SAMMY THE CAT WAS NOT IN THE MOVIE. They did a good job explaning about the red fern growing over their bodies. They did not have the frozen ice scene.

I personaly thought that there wasnt a strong connection between Billy and the dogs.

Also there wasnt much difference between dan and ann. In the book there was difference you could tell which dog was happening at all times. In the movie there was no difference.

Movie Review: Not nearly as good as the book
Summary: 3 Stars

This book lacks so much in emotion and drama. Whereas I cried my eyes out in the book (every time I read it), I didn't even come close in the movie. They left out so many important things. I HATE how they changed the hunt. That was one of the best parts of the novel. I got this to show to my fifth grade class. They agree the book was so much better!

Movie Review: Red Fern review- Mr. Miller's class-per. 2- Mary Clare Molina
Summary: 2 Stars

In my opinion, the book Where the Red Fern Grows was much better than the movie. I think because the movie had to be cut to a certain length, the directors were not able to capture a lot of the concepts the author of the book Where the Red Fern Grows was able to capture. For example, by leaving out the part when Little Ann fell into the freezing lake we were not able to see Old Dan panic for her, which showed us how much he cared for her. Also, in the book, it was clearly stated that Old Dan was brave and curious while Little Ann was smart, laid back, and wise. In the movie, I felt these characteristics were overlooked. I think the movie had a low budget and the directors were not able to hire the best actors. I think if they had been able to hire more experienced actors the movie would have seemed a lot more real and would have caught a lot more interest from its viewers.
I did not like the movie as much as the book because I thought the most important detail in it was how close Billy was to his dogs. It was important how he loved them so much and that he changed from a young boy to a young man because of having Old Dan and Little Ann. The book emphasized that a lot while it did not seem to be shown in the movie. I liked how in the book, you could relate to Billy and understand how Billy felt a lot more because he practically told you his feelings as the book went along. In the movie, you saw it happening but could not easily relate. That is a problem in many movies because it is very difficult to show the character's feelings by filming what is happening. Overall, I think each tiny detail in the book was what made it so interesting while I think the movie was simply boring!
