Movie Reviews of Where the Buffalo Roam

Movie Review: Just Allright
Summary: 3 Stars

Bill Murray plays a form of Hunter S. Thompson in this mediocre film. A lot of people see this after seeing "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" which sets up their reason for not liking it. These movies have no connection whatsoever besides the fact they're both inspired by the same person. In "Fear and Loathing"
the main characters are Raoul Duke and Dr.Gonzo as played by
Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. In this movie the characters are Hunter S.Thompson and Carl Lazlo as played by Bill Murray and Peter Boyle. While "Fear and Loathing" is based on a semi-fictional book of the same name, this movie (while not mentioned) is more or less inspired by Thompsons book Fear and Loathing in America.Another factor is this film was made 17 years before "Fear and Loathing". Anyway we begin with Thompson in what appears to be his house writing a story (his deadline for it is 19 hours) and sicking his dog on a dummy of Richard Nixon. Then he's in a hospital locked up in one of the rooms when his attorney Carl Lazloshows up and then they're in a court room arguing cases for people who are accused of dealing in marijuana. The plot (if you can call it that) is a bit jumpy.
It's a bit like Thompsons writing, it's scattered and void of plot. But that's not the reason I gave it three stars, it's because the movie can be boring. It's a pretty good film overall but there are scenes where Lazlo disappears for seemingly no reason. But the movie is certainly not a waste of time, but I still recommend it. C+

Movie Review: Where the Buffalo Roam
Summary: 3 Stars

If you are a fan of the late, great gonzo writer Hunter S. Thompson, this is a must see. While wildly uneven in Bill Murray's portrayal of HST, and an equally frustrating script, it is much more enjoyable as a movie than the recently released Johnny Depp tour de force portrayal in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", which is often painful to watch, but probably a more accurate representation of the great gonzo himself. The best scenes revolve around his frustrated editor fevorishly seeking copy, while Peter Boyle literally steals the movie as HST's alter ego, Lazlo. A classic scene is with R.M. Nixon in a bathroom. A fun introduction to a truly strange and compelling individual. My best suggestion is to purchase a copy of the documentary "Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride", read his first books on the Hells Angels, the Super Bowl, Las Vegas, and his best work, "The Great Shark Hunt". Go Gonzo!

Movie Review: Soundtrack sucks...movie is good.
Summary: 3 Stars

I have both the original VHS version and the DVD version of this film.
I have to agree with everyone who talks about the DVD soundtrack.
It truly is a pity, I only bought the DVD so I wouldn't ruin the VHS.
I got it for ten bucks at an FYE so it wasn't much of a loss.

This cheesy "go america"! 80's music truly insults the film, hearing it in the background actually makes the movie boring to me and takes away from the whole experience. You watch Fear and Loathing or the original WTBR with the proper soundtrack and it helps add to experience, which is why some people like myself find themselves watching F&L over an over again because it's just that good.
I truly believe that Hunter S. Thompson would shoot the idiot who cheaped out on this DVD. I'd like to.

Movie Review: Good movie, but why?
Summary: 3 Stars

I have been a Thompson fan for years. The first time I saw this movie I was impressed. I owned a copy of the Anchor Bay VHS anxiously waiting for a DVD release. I bought a copy of the Anchor Bay DVD as soon as I knew it existed. Later this DVD was released and I bought a copy in hopes of some bonus material - anything. I was sorely disappointed. I was hoping for more from the original studio. I can only hope for a future release for ANY sort of bonus features. I ended up selling this version, and keeping my original Anchor Bay version. I know that it has non-original music, but it is the version I know.

Movie Review: A good
Summary: 3 Stars

Dumb movie that captures the essence of Hunter S. Thompson but does nothing much else than that. Bill Murray's excelent performance carries the movie through it's episodic and disheveled structure and form. Peter Boyle is excelent in the few scenes he has, but he doesn't trully capture the real, Dr. Gonzo. It is to be watched by fans of Hunter S. Thompson, because only they could probably disseminate the unusual nature and the wild and over the top antics that blanket this film to almost being a feature length Three Stooges.
