Movie Reviews of Where the Buffalo Roam

Movie Review: A story of Hunter S. Thompson
Summary: 4 Stars

'Where The Buffalo Roam' is a story of Hunter S. Thompson's writing antics back in the late 60's and early 70's. The main focus is his coverage of the Nixon campaign. One can't help but compare the 1980 film 'Where The Buffalo Roam' to the 1998 film 'Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas' starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. While Depp did a better and more modern approach to Thompson, you can't write off the talent in 'Where The Buffalo Roam'.

The plot is basically writing assignments for Thompson and how he carries them out. In covering the Superbowl he gave away his tickets and press pass to two loiterers in order to take off with his attorney Lazlo on a strange excursion into a strange "farm" that Lazlo was keeping. There are scenes of Thompson doing some extraordinarily strange things, like flying a jet singing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.

Bill Murray as Hunter S. Thompson does an absolutely fantastic job of capturing the writer's quirks, along with his style of speech. The film captures his abuse of alcohol, drugs, and firearms quite well. Peter Boyle as Lazlo (Thompson's attorney) is magnificent. For a movie without a "big plot" this film is quite entertaining, especially for fans of Hunter S. Thompson and his oddly stylish "gonzo" writing.

I've never watched the VHS version so I cannot comment on the differences in the soundtrack. I also rented so I didn't have access to any extras. But the film alone is enough for some high entertainment, so rent or buy. Enjoy!

Movie Review: A Fun Ride to Nowhere In Particular
Summary: 4 Stars

It was interesting to watch this film after having watched the later "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" so many times. Released in 1980, this features a Bill Murray who was many years from transforming himself from SNL alumnus and goofy comedy star into Oscar-nominated elder statesman. This is only a year removed from "Meatballs," for heaven's sake, yet it was clearly a sign of things to come. Murray's assured performance as gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson can stand right alongside Johnny Depp's more crazed portrayal. The film as a whole is a bit more human than "Fear and Loathing," especially in Peter Boyle's interpretation of Carl Laszlo as a cause junkie (as opposed to Benecio Del Toro's interpretation of Laszlo as simply a junkie, and a criminally insane one, at that). Granted, the narrative doesn't really start anywhere and doesn't really end anywhere, but isn't that the essence of Hunter S. Thompson? It's about the ride, not the story.

I'm not gonna take sides and say this is better or not equal to "Fear and Loathing." I'll say get them both and forget the comparisons. Just enjoy them. As Hunter would've said: It's a crazy world...and somebody's gotta make it crazier.

Movie Review: WTBR vs. Fear and loathing
Summary: 4 Stars

After watching Where the buffalo roam and talking about it to others ive come to learn that most people havnt even heard of it, Surprisingely most fans of Fear and Loathing havnt either or even heard of Hunter S. Thompson, the famous Doctor of gonzo journalism. The story flows along the lines of Thompsons book "Fear and loathing on the campaign trial of 72". The movie doesnt focus on a preticular event but more on the life-style of the early years of Thompson and as well as later unlike fear and loathing in las vegas that takes place in one event and a certain point in time. I give Where the buffalo roam four stars because i'd seen fear and loathing first. Bill Murrey does a great job betraying Dr.Thompson both those who have seen fear and loathing all know that Johnny Depp nails it. Dont get me wrong for the eighties WTBR is a great movie that inroduces a great name of a unique American. Hunter S. Thompson is one of the most inspiring writers/journalist in the world who will be missed greatly. I advise everyone to see this movie and if you havent seen either of them i would advise you see this one first and get to know the characters then see fear and loathing.

Movie Review: =The p@th to enlightment is @ long one=
Summary: 4 Stars

in the case of writing a review,
well, in my case,
if you can call this a case
uhh, an accurate assessment herein lies
with your tolerance of absurdity

this BUFFALO has no idea of a structured plot
it roams through the desolate wasteland of
wacked-out gonzo journalist Hunter S.Thompson
who grazes on booze, drugs, guns...
offering a reverse coma trancelike report on life
or some kind of imitation

have some fun
before the fear and loathing
=w@rning=
it might make some feel like
the only sober guy at the party

Movie Review: good movie
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very descent portrayal of Hunter S. Thompson. It's a little bit more laid back than "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." This is a better portrayal of the day to day Hunter S. Thompson, and is not just focused on one event. If you liked fear and loathing, you will like this.
