Movie Reviews of When the Moors Ruled in EuropeMovie Review: Why all the fuss? Summary: 5 Stars
A little nitpicking by some of the other reviews. I think it's called sophistry, a bit of a distraction from the real issue. The back bone of her thesis (documentary) concerns this 800 year piece of history that was consciously wiped away by Spain & Europe. I am not sure why people are taking it as some sort of argument against Christianity. Too often European historians are willing to repeat lies told by other historians concerning the impact of Africa on European society. Some of the reviews I am reading here is exactly that; well meaning individuals just repeating lies told by other historians. But Miss Hughes went as far as interviewing the Duchess of Medina Sidonia. The Duchess pulled up documents from the 13th century, I believe, showing that her ancestor the great Guzman El Bueno was a Muslim of Moorish decent. Visually, we are able to see some of the great structures built by the Moors. We are able to see ancient texts with translation and addition to "Greek" philosophy.
I don't think some of the reviewers would be happy, even if they witness the Berbers sailing that 9 mile strip between Morocco and Spain.
Summary of When the Moors Ruled in EuropeHow Islamic civilization tamed Western Europe "Inspiring" --The Observer (U.K.) Join British historian Bettany Hughes as she examines a long-buried chapter of European history--the rise and fall of Islamic culture in what is now Spain and Portugal. Although generations of Spanish rulers have tried to expunge this era from the historical record, recent archaeology and scholarship now shed fresh light on the Moors who flourished in Al-Andalus for more than 700 years. This fascinating two-part documentary explodes old stereotypes and offers shocking new insights. You?ll discover the ingenious mathematics behind Granada?s dazzling Alhambra Palace, trace El Cid?s lineage to his Moorish roots, and learn how the Iberian population willingly converted to Islam in droves. Through interviews with noted scholars, you?ll see how Moorish advances in mathematics, astronomy, art, and agriculture helped propel the West out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance. What emerges is a richly detailed portrait of a sensuous, inquisitive, and remarkably progressive Islamic culture in Christian Europe.
