Movie Review: Good message, lousy execution.
Summary: 1 Stars
While the information provided may be engaging in a discussion after viewing, the production value of this movie is absolutely horrible. Filmed in someone's backyard, the noises of the cars and birds in the background are incredibly distracting, and the actors tend to flub their lines quite a bit. Granted, I understand that the message that is being relayed through the movie is key in understanding the role postmodernism plays in relation to therapy, but the shoddy workmanship that went into this detracts from the message. It was painful to sit through.
Summary of When Wittgenstein and Lyotard Talked with Jack and Jill
In this lively film, two famous philosophers are magically brought back to life by Jack, a philosophy student, in order that they might explain postmodernism to his friend Jill, a therapy and counseling student. Jill finds finds philosophy difficult but relevant to her studies. However, once she adapts to the magical situation she enjoys herself and asks these philosophers all the difficult questions that postmodernism invites. The philosophers, in their turn, answer her graciously and in ordinary English. Gradually, the surprising simplicity of their explanations makes the postmodern therapy movement understandable and inviting. The key philosophers brought to life are Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Jean-Francois Lyotard. Lyotard is the author most responsible for making the word "postmodern" a household word. Wittgenstein's ideas are central to most postmodern therapists and they are key to Lyotard's own philosophy of the postmodern. -- The film is 54 minutes long, and serves both as an instructional medium for therapists and graduate students and as engaging introduction to postmodernism for all.
