Movie Review: Unbridled Dross
Summary: 1 Stars
A feckless biopic of the legendary L.A. punk band The Germs, this film plays like a bad CW pilot that runs on for way too long. All the characters seem more like caricatures than real human-beings. Shane West may well be a diehard punk rock fan but frankly, he's better suited to playing more conventional, mainstream leading men than dealing with the subtle, layered character work that is required to play Darby Crash. Bijou Phillips delivers a decent performance as Lorna Doom. Rick Gonzalez is always competent, a solid actor for my money, but unfortunately, he isn't capable of straying too far from himself and aside from the wild hair and wardrobe, is nothing like Pat Smear. In fact, both Crash and (especially) Smear have very specific, often exaggerated manners of speech and vocal affectations which neither West nor Gonzalez seemed terribly concerned with acquiring for their roles, though at least West puts in some effort. The supporting cast are OK, struggling through a lackluster narrative that doesn't deliver any of the energy or imagination inherent in the old L.A. punk scene it attempts in vain to capture. I assume the surviving members of The Germs made some money off this, as well they should given all they've contributed to our musical landscape, both as a single unit and through their respective catalogs, but I wish they had thrown less support behind what I have to describe as a painfully mediocre film.
