Movie Reviews of What's Up, Doc?

Movie Review: The Greatest Adult Comedy Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

What's Up Doc is one of the funniest films ever made--possibly the greatest "adult" comedy ever! Why is it "adult?" Because it doesn't pander to the lower, R-rated nature of today's teen audiences. Instead, through charm and old-fashioned clever writing the film is a joy for adults to watch.

Streisand once said that she regretted the film, yet her commentary accompanies the DVD release. Maybe she realizes that the audiences saw in the film something she didn't recognize when she made it: the movie is built on her playfulness and vulnerability. Because she was willing to let the director shoot it HIS way and not HER way, it ends up being the funniest Streisand film ever made.

A classic that can be watched over and over again, with one of the best supporting casts in a modern movie. Why isn't Hollywood making movies like this anymore?

Movie Review: All-out Fun & Madness!
Summary: 5 Stars

Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I slide this DVD into the player, relax, and laugh out loud! Peter Bogdanovich strikes the funny-bones with this romantic comedy. Please, do not miss this one! The casting is flawless, with Ryan O'Neal as the adorable absent-minded Professor, and Babs as the flighty, accident -prone femme, who simply MUST have this man! But what makes the movie so juicy, is the supporting cast. Madeline Kahn made her debut in this film, proving herself as a Comedienne worthy of her future as a Mel Brooks icon. Kenneth Mars and Austin Pendelton add to this delightful mix of madness. With a script by Buck Henry (remember TV's "Get Smart?) this flick is fine for a family fun night as capers upon capers criss-cross and unglue around San Francisco - - - the "get-away" is worth the cost of this "ticket!" Pop the popcorn and have fun!

Movie Review: It's about time
Summary: 5 Stars

I was surprised that this, one of the funniest movies of all time, hadn't been released on DVD sooner. When Madeline Kahn passed away, I was certain Warner would release this, her first movie, and one of her most memorable roles as Eunice Burns, the nagging, anally retentive, severly A-type personality that manages to keep things running smoothly (if not always happily) for Howard Banister (as in "sliding down the..."), a wonderfully understated turn by Ryan O'Neil. This movie has an amazingly wide appeal as it embraces so many styles of comedy - farce, slapstick, intellectual humor (with some brilliantly witty banter) - that it appeals on so many levels. Always on my top 10 list of favorite movies, and loved by everyone I've ever recommended it to, this is a great addition to anyone's DVD movie collection.

Movie Review: Barbara Streisand & Madeline Kahn at their finest!
Summary: 5 Stars

The comedic timing and the wonderful acting in this movie makes it one that you'll want to watch over and over again. I first saw this as a child (probably around 8-10) and loved it. I recently bought it here off Amazon since I couldn't find it in any video place to rent. I'm glad I bought it! My husband and I laughed and laughed. Barbara Streisand is uproarously funny as the screw up Judy who causes mayhem anywhere she goes. Poor Ryan O'Neal gets caught up in the middle of things when he meets Judy and his life falls apart, but for the better. Madeline Kahn's performance as O'Neal's fiance is hilarious and you can see why she becomes such a great comedy actress in future roles like in Young Frankenstein (also highly recommend). This is a comedy classic and everyone should watch it!

Movie Review: You must remember this....it's brilliant.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm very picky about buying movies, they all have to mean something to me. I saw this when I was but a wee bairn in its first theatrical release. (OK, I think I was 9.) I remember how hard I laughed then but I laugh harder now. This film is not just a joy to watch, but the dialogue is a joy to listen to. And another amazing thing: there's no music soundtrack to tell you when to laugh. It's all up to the actors, and this is a rare case of extraordinary chemistry. About the extra features: Peter Bogdanovich's commentary does add something, but Streisand's is a waste of time. That's the only negative thing about this DVD, and it's a very small complaint. This is one of the greatest comedies ever made. Get it. (And find out the meaning of "Propriety.")
