Movie Reviews of What's Up, Doc?

Movie Review: A lovely visit to an old genre.
Summary: 5 Stars

The likeness to films such as "Bringing up Baby", a hilarious Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn romp from the 30's, has been made before but this film is really more the updated version with an entirely different script and jokes for a modern audience.
The film really only echo's the madcap pace and utter silliness of the plot of it's predacessor, and ofcourse revitalises the genre.
Because the 70's was the era of action movies it is very much the madcap comedy, "on the road" and the San Francisco car/bike/chinese dragon chase is superbly executed! (and if you haven't seen the film this scene is even crazier than I make it sound, it stands out as the climactic scene and simply must be seen even if you don't do the rest of the film!)
Streisand is zany, snappy and has acidic wit and snappy timing. O'Neal is perfect as the hapless, hopeless boffin.
Khan (god rest her sweet soul) is the her usual whacky, laugh out loud self; I find some differing subtle in her comedy ever time I re-watch some of her work and she is just brilliant in this.
A highly recommended screwball bunch of fun, the perfect curl up and have fun film. Now undoubtedly a classic, even good old Bugs get's in on the action; well the title is his catchphrase!

Movie Review: Leaves me limp with exhilaration...
Summary: 5 Stars

Imagine my surprise when I learned that one of my all-time favourite movies had been released on DVD. Why surprised you may ask? well...I had no idea that so many other people felt the same way I do about a movie that was made over 30 years ago and that you never see on TV or cable...ever...not even on the late, late, late show. Who knew?
I first saw What's Up Doc? on my ninth birthday and never laughed so hard for so long. Many years later, I purchased my first VCR and this was one of the first movies in my collection.
Every boyfriend, bestfriend, relative, neighbor and even dinner guests have been required to watch this at least once. I have made it one of my goals in life to share the adventures of Judy, Howard and Eunice with everyone I know.
This movie has memorable characters, great dialogue (I quote it on a regular basis)is fast-paced,chaotic and has one of the funniest chase scenes ever! Screwball at it's best.
Barbra Streisand and Ryan ONeal have terrific chemistry,
Kenneth Mars, who plays the nasty Hugh Simon,is a treat to behold and of course, the incomprable Madeline Khan steals each and every scene as only she could.
And now that it's on DVD, who could ask for anything more?

Movie Review: One Great Comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

Now ordinarally I hate Streisand, I think she has a terrible singing voice and worse acting abilites. But despite all that, she works for this moive. This comedy is a gem. Ryan O'Neal's performance is flawless as the absent minded college professor who only interested in his rocks, not even fully realizing he is engaged to one "dangerously unbalanced woman". Which brings in Madaline Kahn in her star making debut as Unis. "Unis, a person called Unis." She is so obnoxious as the bossy girlfriend that it is hilarious to watch. Watch for Ryan O'Neal's line about her. "I don't think of you as a woman. I think of you as Unis." Classic. And while the film was inspired by the much eairler "Bringing Up Baby", the film gets by on it's on merits. The story centers around four similar absurd looking overnight bags, that not only end up in the same city, not only in the same hotel, but the same floor of the hotel. The film starts strong and only gets funnier as it goes along to one of the best and funniest chase scenes of all time, and the funniest courtroom scene of all time. I guarentee if you are not laughing as hard as you have ever laughed at this film, you need to check your sense of humor.

Movie Review: Best Comedy Ever (?)
Summary: 5 Stars

Quite possibly it is the best comedy committed to film.

I'll state this at the beginning of my review: Madeline Kahn has possibly THE best debut role in film history. She carries it off wonderfully - and led her almost as funny roles in Mel Brooks' movies.

I've been waiting forever for this to be released on DVD. Even the original date of last fall didn't go through - and I was crushed. I usually pre-order NOTHING - but this I did. ..and I did again when a new release date was announced.

Though I can do w/out the header "The Streisand Collection", I assume it would not have been released without some name attached. That being said - it's still a GREAT movie.

It has everything going against it (who would think Streisand and O'Neal?) yet everything going for it. It seems like an overdone plot worthy of any sitcom (chase scenes, mixed-up luggage), but all of it really really works. This is what they were all trying to achieve - and which no one has been able to do since.

As mentioned in earlier review, the entire movie is quotable and hilarious. *If* there is a weak point, it's Streisand singing. It's not horrid - but it's not needed.

BUY IT. BUY IT. BUY IT.

Movie Review: What are you doing with Howard's rocks?
Summary: 5 Stars

Dr. Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal) is on his way to a convention to try to win a grant; he carries a plaid over-night bag containing experimental rocks. A mysterious stranger at an airport picks up an identical plaid bag containing top secrets. A rich lady carries (you guessed it) a plaid over-night bag full of her jewels. To add to the mix is a walking accident Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand) carrying her own plaid bag.

Soon all are inevitability going to converge. Toss in mistaken identities and a bubble bath. You have one of the most memorable comedies.

Lots of fun comedy with most of the clichés, Back and forth in a hallway, Obligatory chase scene, they show their puns, and even a quasi food fight, all over a hand full of bags. At one point Judy hangs around out side Howard's window; one wonders how her towel stays on.

If this ever gets sorted out we are in for a surprise.

If you find the concept of mixed bags funny then you need to also watch Sylvester Stallone in "Oscar" (1991).
