Movie Reviews of What Dreams May Come

Movie Review: Countervailing Forces
Summary: 5 Stars

There are not many works of art that propel and sadden me in the way this film did. Disclaimer: I despise tragic movies; there is enough tragedy in the world for the film industry to not add to it any further. However, What Dreams May Come is a tragedy that helped me center my understandings of true love.

Several friends recommended I view the movie, but I was relunctant to because of the heavy subject matter. I began the movie disgruntled that the tragedy occured so soon; I misperceived initially that it would be about this guy coping with his wife's unfortunate death.

Fortunately, I was wrong. Instead, the next hour and a half revealed the meat that could lay behind the terms "soulmates", "destiny", and "linked hearts" when the intimate connection between two people is true. I finished the movie with tear-stained cheeks, a half-smile, and the irreducible belief that there are spaces where true love persosts.

Now, regardless of the warnings of others, my embattled psyche, and the hopelessness that so often surrounds us in a cultured mired by pessimism, I believe in love.

Movie Review: Check out the alternate ending!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have seen the movie on VHS but never DVD - you MUST get the DVD version. There is an alternate ending on the DVD. It was never used so it wasn't "polished" but it is a wonderful spin. I like it better than the original ending. I won't spoil it for you but it is quite a bit longer than the ending actually used and fits better with the rest of the film.

The film itself is wonderful. The bulk of the movie deals with the reality of perception (note, I did not say the perception of reality). The only subject matter I have seen close to this was in Seth Speaks. They skirt around God and the actual heaven so there should be no offense. The only reference to God is by Cuba Gooding who, when asked where God figures in on all this, answers to the effect that he's out there watching us. Chris (Robin Williams) is in his own 'part' of heaven and Annie is in her own 'part' of hell. The City of Gold can be seen in the distance but is never entered into. No matter what your religion, you should not take offense (if you do, you are trying).

Lovely movie, this is good for all ages.

Movie Review: One of my all time favorites
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is so incredible, I don't even know where to start. Robin Williams is great in this movie, it's one of his best performances hands down. Annabella Sciorra is perfect as his tormented wife. Cuba Gooding Jr. gives a surprisingly touching and impressive performance as an angel. And who can forget the dalmatian?? The plot is heartbreaking: After losing their kids, Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra are trying to cope when Robin dies trying to save a life. Anabella plunges into deep depression. From heaven, Robin tries desperatley to reach Annabella. She ends her own life and he spends the rest of the movie trying to reach her in hell. Their kids have surprising and delightful roles in his quest. The imagery in this movie is top notch, especially for 1998! Heaven and Hell are depicted so incredibly real, I felt as if that may actually be what they are like. The concept of 'soulmates' takes center stage in this touching melodrama. It's the ultimate love story and tradgedy. Let me warn you- have tissues nearby.

Movie Review: The only movie that has ever truely moved me!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am shocked and astonished to hear so many critics complain about such an amazing movie!! I don't know maybe it's because there's so many religious people out there that were appauled by something different like life after death, but who really knows it was just a movie and a very compelling one at that. If people who just be open minded and watch the movie w/out reservations they would see a beautiful movie with fantastic acting and wonderful special effects, the movie will take you reeling on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Open up take in all it's beauty and superb acting than you will see one of the most incredible movies of our time. It did not get the recognition it desirved and I believe that has a lot to do with the whole religion aspect. For those of us with a fear of dieing this just gives us a little something to hope for in the after life. I've never had a movie truely move like this one. So all you skeptics open your mind a little bit and let this movie in, because it truely is beautiful!!!!!

Movie Review: Wow!
Summary: 5 Stars

I remembered seeing the previews for this movie before it come out in the theaters. I was thinking about how colorful and magical it seemed.
I didn't see it in the theater but finally saw it on DVD when it came out. Yes, this movie is so vividly colorful and amazing.
But on the flip side, it is profoundly sad and gut-wrenching too. I ended up having to stop watching it half-way through and come back to finish
watching it a few hours later.

One thing that bothered me though was the discontinuous story-line. It was often hard to follow as the story seemed to jump around chronologically
and some of the situations were confusing and unclear.

But all in all, I did like the movie and found it amazing to watch. I would recommend it. I think its a good example of "love conquers all" even through
heaven and hell and the afterlife.
