Movie Reviews of Wet Hot American SummerMovie Review: Appeals to a very specific type of person Summary: 5 Stars
If you were a teenager in the eighties and remember all of those hokey-camp flicks, you will love this movie. This flick really is geared squarely towards gen-x'ers; it attempts to recreate the look, feel, and attitude of the eighties (and does so perfectly in my opinion), while at the same time it pokes fun at a decade that really was, well... silly.
The whole falling SkyLab thing was hysterical to me; I can remember being in junior-high and having science teachers talk about the decaying orbit of SkyLab, and being sure it was going to land on my house(!).
Hindsight is what makes much of this movie funny. It's funny because in 1983, this movie, with very little adjustment, could have been released as one of the movies that it mocks. In some ways the humor is too well executed; if you don't get the joke right away you might as well turn it off.
Oh man, and don't even get me started on the soundtrack...
Movie Review: Best Movie Ever Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this movie a few weeks ago not knowing beforehand that several members of the State are in it and that Wain and Showalter produced and wrote it. The first time I saw it I thought it was great. Upon second and subsequent viewings I realized that it is the smartest and funniest comedy ever made. Yes, this is just my opinion, but that doesn't make it any less true. Showalter, Black, Marino and Lo Truglio are simply amazing. The rest of the cast is great too, especially Christopher Meloni (sp?) as Gene. Garafolo and Pierce are easily the least funny people in the movie, but even they pull off a few good moments. By the way, if you are stupid (i.e. Roger Ebert) you will probably not like this movie. It will leave you confused and angry. If you are a real person, however, you will want to watch it constantly. Hopefully Showalter and Wain will make another movie soon. Again, funniest movie ever made...
Movie Review: Nearly ruptured my appendix, I laughed so hard... Summary: 5 Stars
I have heard many people say that Wet Hot American Summer is not funny, and I have to agree. It's not funny. It is freakin' hilarious. You have the trip to town, which goes off on such a ridiculous tangent that you're in stitches when it goes back to camp. You have Janeane Garofalo and David Hyde Pierce, who have great comic chemistry together. And, of course, let's not forget Christopher Meloni, whose Vietnam vet camp cook is such a looneytune that he gives Bill Murray's groundskeeper from "Caddyshack" a good run for his money. His scenes might as well have you in the emergency room with a ruptured appendix, you'll be laughing so hard. This movie is a cut above other genre parodies in the theatres or on the shelves. If you have to rent this movie more than twice, you should honestly put up the extra cash and buy it. It's worth every penny, and you'll be glad you did.
Movie Review: love is all right tonight Summary: 5 Stars
This is an across the board good, funny, unusual movie with several extended sequences that are drop-dead, wet-your-pants funny. The film seems like a sharp satire of early 80's teen flicks like Meatballs and Caddyshack, and it succeeds as such, but it is really much smarter and more anarchist (in a good way) than that format would seem to allow. The cast is great, without exception. Even the kids who have speaking roles are well-drawn. Christopher Meloni (from Law & Order S.V.U.) is also particularly fun. this was an excellent film in the theatre and is even better on DVD (especially if you get together a group of friends who will appreciate it). there are a ton of extras. the deleted scenes are all hilarious (tha animal house one killed me. KILLED me.), the commentary insightful and the short documentary suprisingly touching. i really can't recommend this one highly enough.
Movie Review: Irreverent and brilliant Summary: 5 Stars
When I heard about a film starring Janeane Garofalo and created by a couple of brains from The State/Upright Citizens Brigade, I knew it was worth a full-price admission ticket to check it out. Boy was I right. This knowing nod to early '80s camp movies offers what so many of this summer's disappointments don't: real laughs, an engaging pace, fully-realized characters (even in their cartoonish-ness) and truly GREAT acting from every single person on screen. Citing specifics isn't necessary--every character is fun, every performance a gem. The humor is smart without being stuffy, irreverent without being mean-spirited, and kind-hearted without being cloying. Their fearless & hilarious take on a couple of taboo subjects is so refreshing--but don't get me wrong, this is no Farrelly brothers movie. It's way smarter than that, and funnier. Go see it.
