Movie Reviews of Welcome to the Dollhouse

Movie Review: Unflinchingly real
Summary: 5 Stars

There are two schools of thought on this movie. When you finish it, you'll either be bawling because it hit you with how much it was like how your life was when you were Dawn's age (though sometimes its slightly earlier or later) or you'll be wondering how anyone could think that the film is in any way realistic.

That being said, this movie is, hands down, the most accurate portrayal of what being an outsider is like. It tells the story of middle school from the other side. And it doesn't give a Napoleon Dynamite sort of romanticization.

Movie Review: Scathing, Wicked, Sad and Funny.
Summary: 5 Stars

No one does Black Comedy better than Todd Soldonz, and while this won't have one watching through their fingers like his follow-up "Happiness," but this surely will go down as the most-scathing portrayal of junior high ever filmed. Low-budget, but with writing and acting like this I don't need great lighting or a slick production. If you hated junior high, highly reccomended. If you were a Mean Girl or Boy, you will see how your actions affected others.

Movie Review: Well
Summary: 5 Stars

Depressing, but very well made and acted. A hard-hitting heavy dose of reality. And many seem to think that everyone has gone through it in junior high and everyone has at one time or another been at the lower end of the social spectrum. It's not true. There is a fine line set and you either are at the bottom or you aren't. And that order usual keeps itself maintained. The popular usually stay popular and the geek usually stays at the bottom.

Movie Review: Realistic Look On One Loser's Life
Summary: 5 Stars

Welcome To The Dollhouse is not what it is all about. Picking up the box at Blockbuster, I thought it was about a dollhouse. But further and further into the movie, you find out the name of her brother's band's song is Welcome To The Dollhouse. It is really about a young girl dealing with bullies, rape, and trying to be cool in a junior high. This movie does have some cussing, but it all clears up and it becomes a great movie.

Movie Review: A sweet, funny movie.
Summary: 5 Stars

Welcome to the Dollhouse was a touching film and the main character was so easy to relate to! As a girl who was relentlessly teased growing up I can completely relate to Heather Matarazzo's character. Her courage and spirit are fantastic and her way of dealing with her family, classmates, and her everyday life is remarkable. A funny, quick-witted movie for anyone who is currently in, or survived adolescence.
