Movie Reviews of Welcome to the Dollhouse

Movie Review: Charming yet disturbing, and rings hauntingly true to life
Summary: 5 Stars

I appreciate directors such as the one who directed "Welcome to the Dollhouse" for creating an image of the real world, in which everyone isn't popular, beautiful, and happy from the start.

Pretty much, to sum up the whole plot of the film, its about the coming of age of a Junior High School pariah nicknamed "Weinerdog" by her exceptionally immature classmates. She's threatened, harassed, ignored (middle child syndrome?), and is nonexistent in the eyes of a much older boy she finds herself in love with.

However, I really didn't like how the film ended, as it ended without a resolution. The main character, Dawn Weiner, seems to be such a clone of her older brother, and nothing changed with the behavior of her family.

Well written film, which I could relate to with some of the experiences I had to deal with for 14 years of my life. I would be interested in seeing more by this director.

Movie Review: Hysterical...Helped Me Through Junior High
Summary: 5 Stars

I was an outsider in grade school and jr. high for no good reason, as is the case for most kids on the "outside". It was really hard for me to deal with things, and I was unsure if things would ever get better.

My mom took me to see "Welcome to The Dollhouse" at the independent movie theatre when it came out. I could uncannily relate to what Dawn was going through, although I'm an only child (which is also difficult, no matter WHAT they say!) My mom and I talked about the movie, and it really put things into perspective Things eventually got better for me, and I figured the same happened to Dawn as well (if she really existed), I felt such a personal connection to Dawn.

It's still a fave of mine because it reminds me how far I have come, and we all have come, from the horrors of junior high.

Watch and enjoy this gem of a movie. It might change your life! :)

Movie Review: Life is so Cruel
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie made me cringe with the horrible treatment of Dawn, or otherwise known as weinerdog. It is the kind of movie that makes you want to throttle her parents, all the kids at her school, and especially her little brat of a sister. Watching it made me remember my middle and high school years of being tormented for being an all A student geek and for also teasing others. It is such an interesting movie because does any of that really end after high school? I don't think so. Anyway i have already recommended this to many of my friends, and when i first saw this with one of my friends she wanted to end it in the first thirty minutes or so but I wouldn't let her. At the end she was glad she watched all of it and really liked it. I think that most people will love this movie and sincerely stamp it with my approval to watch it for yourself.

Movie Review: A movie so real and relentless but so worth the effort.
Summary: 5 Stars

I hate the gay pride parades every year. I went twice and know that I've seen what I need to. So since 1995 I choose a movie to go to instead. To make it more special I choose something that is less mainstream or at least offbeat. In 96 I saw this film. I was so dumbstruck at first because it was so real and the ending left me emotional. But that's what a great movie does. For such a serious subject there are no easy answers and the director/writer did not dumb this down. The cast, most especially Heather Matarazzo and the extremely cute and intense Brendan Sexton III, are brilliant. For most people this was high school. I couldn't wait to buy this movie and every friend I've shown this to has been affected.

Movie Review: Humiliating, Horrific, and real
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are a parent with a child in Junior High School I would highly recommend seeing this movie. Although it is horrifying, it will help you understand the kind of world your child is probably inhabiting everyday, and help you to be more kind and compassionate towards them. This movie so closely mirrored my own experiences that I almost wept. Not out of self-pity, but out of gratitute that someone else was finally telling the truth about life for many at that age. This movie does not exaggerate anything. Junior High School really is as brutal and humiliating as it is portrayed in this film. Aside from being realistic, this film is also superbly acted, written and directed. Todd Solondz is a genius.
